When Do Westies Need Their First Clipping?

I have a five month old westie who I brush daily but when do I take him for his first 'trim' session?
Plus, how do I get rid of those brown tear stains?

WHWT are HAND-STRIPPED -not clippered .
CLIPPERING *RUINS* that sort of coat.
COMB,not BRUSH!! COMB!
Shoulda been started months ago.

Please dont get him clipped – find a groomer who will strip instead!!
You can take him whenever you like – take him as young as possible just for a general bath/groom so that he can get used to the enviroment and what it entails. Ask the groomer to show you how to give a basic hand-strip for inbetween grooms – most would be more than happy to show you as it means less work when you next take him in!!
I know there are special pad wipes for tear stains, but mine has never had those eyes stains – I wipe every morning when he wakes up with tissues but, touch wood, he doesnt have watery eyes and they dont get messy anyway!!
Congrats on a good choice – but I hope he's not your first dog!!

CULL – For once, we agree!!

And for the person below – I didnt say they HAVE to be stripped, but even for a pet westie, its so much better for them! They have harsh coats for a reason and why would you not want to keep them with the coat they have naturally?! Its much easier to keep a westies coat clean and white (without bathing) if its stripped rather than clipped.

he is ready for his trim now , even if he doesn't look like he needs a trim get him clipped as soon as you can , he need to get used to it while he is still young or he will be very difficult to groom when he is older . you can buy whiting shampoo's that should get rid of the stains other than that just take a wet piece of cotton and gently wipe away any gunge around the eyes ,it wont get rid of the stain but will stop it getting any worse .

You should make an appointment now and take him as soon as you can. The younger a dog starts going to the groomers the easier it is for them to get used to all the things that go on there, dryers running, clippers near them, toenails trimmed etc…
The longer you wait the more difficult and stressful it will be for the dog. It can get to the point where a groomer, won't be able to do anything with him for fear of him hurting himself in panic!
And, pet Westies DON'T HAVE to be hand stripped! It will NOT ruin his coat to clipper it! Does it "ruin" your hair when you cut it? NO.
Hand stripping is a long, continuous process that needs to be done every day, a little at a time to maintain the length, there's no reason to hand strip if you are not showing your dog.
When you take your pup to the groomer they should clip the hair in the corners of the eyes, this will get rid of the tear stains, then you can take a cotton ball with warm water once a day and swab the area daily and that will help keep them from coming back.

I know from experience that the soon the better with a westie, however i don't agree with the stripping vs. clipped debate. All my westies are clipped due to the fact that I don't show my dogs, they don't live outside, and they are not exposed to harsh conditions. I did have one little boy hand stripped in the beginning and the woman was a hack. She destoyed his coat and skin. If you go this route please make sure that the groomer knows what they are doing. Regarding the teat stains, baby oil can be a good aid to keep the stains from sticking, just be very careful.
