How Long Do Westies Live?

I own a Westie (West Highland White Terrier) and he is four and a half years old. How long do they normally live?

You are so lucky to own a Westie. I lost mine and they are so great. Your little dog (according to my dog book) will probably live from 11-15 years. I think this all depends on the breeding and the type of life the dog lives. My Harry was bought at a pet store . I knew after I had him about 4 days that he was not in good shape, but I was so in love I wouldn't take him back. When his papers arrived I found out that he was from a puppy mill in Missouri. My vet told me one time I had enough money in him to buy a car, but as far as I was concerned it didn't matter. I was in love and I know he would have done the same for me. Harry was eleven.

The average life of span of any dog (It doesn't matter what breed) is 10 to 12 years. This is the average though so your Westie could live to 29 years, the record for the oldest dog!

with all the different foods and things for dogs these days they don't age as fast as they used to so your dog will probably end up living a lot longer than 10-12 years. we have two westies and had another before them and my grandparents also had one, and i just have to say that you made a great decision when you got yours!

There quite a long lived breed, being a smaller dog. I would say you can expect a purebred westie to live at least 10 years – I've seen some 16 year old ones but this would be more unusual. Be impressed and pleased if he lives into his teens!

EDIT: Oh, what – there's no average lifespan for dogs in general, there's too much variation in life expectancy between the different breeds! Great Danes for example are lucky to live to 8, whereas a chihuahua would be disappointing if it didn't make it into its teens.

Westies are known to have a lot of medical issues. Most have food alergies. Smaller dogs have been known to live longer than bigger dogs. Average life span or a westie is about 10-18 years.
