Westies can have very independent attitudes. But they're great family dogs and really smart. They will learn things like where to go to the bathroom and how to act in the house pretty quickly, but .. training for things like formal competition obedience, they can be stubborn!!
So I guess, you'd need to be more specifc with your question. Just what is it you want to train a Westie to do? If you're wanting a fun little family dog that be playful and not destroy your house, yea, they can be trained for that pretty easily. If you're looking for a competition agility dog … that will take a LOT more work.
And deadgame has had little dog training experience if he thinks that training isn't breed specific. Some breeds ARE more people oriented and willing to please. That is a genetic trait.

NOT BREED SPECIFIC!
ALL training ….for any dog….is completely dependent on the human involved!

If are stern from the beginning then they should be easier. My friends family is has been breeders for like 50 years and they always say don't be fooled by there appearance they are not like yorkies and toy dogs they are working dogs and not so easy to train. For more info you could watch dogs101 there is an episode on westies. lol it's my friends family.

As with any dog it's hard to generalize within a breed the trainability as a whole. Some westies will be easier to train and other's harder. If you would compare in generalities say to a labrador retriever would in general be easier to train. However, dogs are individuals so making such a broad characterization is really not fair. I am guilty of making such generalities sometimes, but try and refrain.
