I have a 8 year old female westie that has been fixed that lives inside and I am thinking about getting a male German Shepherd. Im worried about her reaction towards a new dog. I am also worried about not being able to show her as much attention when the new puppy arrives because I know I will be spending lots of time training and exercising with the german shepherd. Please let me know what I should do.
It all hinges on you. Is your Westie trained? As a generality, females tend to accept males more easily than other females. However, some dogs are fine with anything and others HATE ALL OTHERS.
You need to introduce the puppy as a new friend, make it fun for your dog, and definitely don't forget about her. All dogs can run, even at 8 years old, so involve her in some of the running around. Unless she has a major health issue, she should not be left out. That should take care of resentment.
