I really want a West Highland White Terrier, AKA Westie. I want it as a puppy. Are they easy to handle? I already have three dogs and two cats, but I really want a puppy. My dogs are too big to sleep with me so I want a tiny dog. I heard they usually have allergies. Is that true?

Coming from a westie mom I love them. I always have. My westie is not tiny she weighs about 11-12 pounds. They are very tenacious little dogs. Very head strong so they can be a challenge to train. You have to set firm rules from the very beginning. My westie is a very sweet girl. she loves to hug and kiss and cuddle on the couch. I have heard of some that have allergies but mine doesn’t . they tend to be very healthy active little dogs

well as someone who has a 9 month old puppy i just want to let you know that they grow really fast, my cocker spaniel is already fully grown so if you want something that is going to be cute and tiny a westie is not the right dog for you. by 8 months of age they are generally about 10kgs.
they’re not bad dogs, but i have 3 friends who own them and none of these dogs come when they are called and so they cannot be trusted off lead. i don’t know why but for some reason this breed just doesn’t come when you call it! so you need to decide whether you want a dog you can trust off the lead or whether you would be ok walking it every day on lead only.
as to their allergies i’m not 100% sure whether it’s a breed thing or whether it varies animal to animal, i think you would need to research this online. good luck

Well bred Westies aren’t tiny. They’re small, but still will hit about 25 pounds. That’s edging into "mid-sized". Just thought you should know.
Yes, they’re fantastic pets. Smart, a little stubborn, and they can be a challenge to train, but compared to other terriers, they are very trainable and very cuddly. You’ll need to set firm rules and insist on good behavior all the time.
Allergies vary by individual. Some have them, some don’t.
