What Temperature Is Too Cold to Sleep Out Side for My Westie and Maltese?

They were used to be in the house but now they no longer can come inside the house because of my parents. I feel bad, but what’s the temperature for them to feel cold? Female westie thats about 1-2years old and my maltese is about 10months old or a year?(male)
we have the igloo house with fluffy dog mattress..I’m just bit worried about my dogs… any help?

No no no, this is very bad!!! These two dogs MUST LIVE indoors, always! These are two very small breeds, and they CANNOT live outside, they will freeze, or they will get overheated, and both could be fatal. If you can’t convince your parents to let them come inside, you have to take them to a shelter to be re homed. That Maltese is still a puppy, and I HOPE to dog that your Westie is spayed! I can just imagine them unsupervised, outside all day, and then having a litter of pups born outside. Plus, these are both companion breeds!! They are not even part time outdoor dogs.

I gotta tell you, I am very partial to Westies. I really don’t want to see one in this situation. You need to do something about this. If that means being responsible, then you have to take them to a shelter to find good homes where they can live in peoples laps like they are supposed to :(

Whatever the issue is, post a new question and then we can address it the best of our ability.

These breeds of dogs are meant to be companions, and house pets. Not to live outdoors. If you can’t talk your folks into bringing them back inside, then find them a new home.

You should be worried. Why exactly is it that two toy breeds, dogs that were never meant to be kept outdoors, are no longer allowed inside? If it’s a housebreaking issue, than that can be corrected if you’re willing to work at it. If this is a non-negotiable issue with your parents, then they both should be found good homes

I agree that they should be given to someone who can keep them indoors. The Maltese will get matted very easily. Hopefully, you can work out an arrangement, possibly keeping them in kennels at night in your room.

The Maltese cannot EVER sleep outside. He looks like he’s coated, but he has no undercoat, and he will be cold, which will lead to illness and death. The Westie is a little tougher, but not much.

Dogs are family members, and family members don’t sleep outside.

Livestock sleeps outside. Family lives in the house.

I agree with the other answers that say these two dogs should NOT live outside. They were bred and then taught to be inside dogs. They need to be with their family. Both these little creatures are still young enough to be considered puppies. They don’t even have their full adult characteristics yet and you want to put them outside? I don’t know what the problem is with your parents, but you should either work it out with them or rehome the dogs. They need to live in a house with their people.

Everything I wanted to say has already been said, so I won’t go into it more, but consider this–these are two very small dogs and you need to think about just their basic safety. They’re small enough that a cocky owl or hawk could see them and want to make dinner out of one of them. They could get into a fight with a raccoon or other mammal, and even if no injuries are sustained, what about diseases? The westie especially is who you should worry about, as she’s a tenacious, feisty terrier and may attempt to take down any small furry thing she sees, despite any damage it could inflict on her.

The bottom line is that your dogs aren’t safe, their physical and emotional needs aren’t being met, and their basic need for human companionship isn’t being met. Rehome the dogs or surrender them to a rescue.

They have fur to protect them and you say they have a house with mattress, etc. They will be fine living outdoors. Stop worrying.

Don’t listen to these people who tell you these dogs cannot live outside. Many dogs of these breeds live outside without any problems. Besides, you really have no choice in matter if your parents have banned them from the house. You either have to keep them outside or get rid of them.
