Is it wrong to be proud of my westie puppy for killing a mouse?
I usually use live traps in the attic and basement and check them every other day but my westie just caught a mouse in my kitchen and I was proud of her and praised her. My sister thinks it is bad that I awarded my terrier for killing something.
What do you think?
Its a good thing… unless you have neighbors who put out poison for the rodents.
Train the dog to bring you the dead mice and trade them in for his favorite treat. I used to know some folks who had a twin black tomcats who had been trained to trade dead rats for hot dogs. Sometimes the pile of rats got pretty big, but it was better than risking the cats eating the rodents themselves and being poisoned.
You can't train the dog not to do it; it is bred right into his bones. You may as well encourage it.

lol. Westies were originally bred as ratters…it's her instinct; she will probably do it no matter what.

He!! no, that's a good dog right there. If your child killed a mouse that would be different but your when your dog does it, that's awesome!

Your terrier didn't kill a pet or anything. Mice are pests, and can be very destructive.

Terriers were bred to kill vermin! That IS good of it.
I jump on the couch and scream at my pets to catch them. NO VERMIN LEAVES MY HOUSE ALIVE

Tell sister terrier dogs were bred for catching and killing rodents and vermin. I was very proud of my rat terrier for removing the rats from Grandpa's barn, so was Grandpa. Westies are trained to run mazes using a rat scent. Don't punish a dog for doing what is was bred to do.

Most Terriers will do that because they were bred to get rid of vermin. And not only mice but rats, moles, voles, etc. All vermin! You are the proud mommy of a very good dog! She deserved praise.
My Pomeranian-Rat Terrier mix, has been catching mice and all the other vermin, since he was 6 months old. There are almost no mice or moles left around our area…
Welcome to the Club!!!

I'd praise my westie if she killed vermin! It's what she was bred for. It's better to kill a pest than to allow it to roam your home! Tell your sister that your dog was trying to do you a favor; embrace your terrier for acting like a terrier. Don't be surprised when you bring home a dog–and it acts like a dog!
And, it's better to praise her and encourage her to bring the dead body to you rather than discourage her, which will cause her to hide it or eat it. It's not likely that you can successfully convince a high prey drive breed to stop chasing and killing vermin. You don't want to discover her little stash weeks or more later, and you don't want her to eat the meat because it could give her internal parasites. It's better to accept it as a gift from her
My sister's dog loves killing wild bunnies in our backyard. He doesn't bring them to my mom because she FREAKS OUT at him; he leaves them outside and tries to get my sister to come outside so he can show her. We just tell him thanks, give him a treat, and clean it up! It's a very good little arrangement. He keeps little critters from eating our garden, raccoons from digging, and wards off birds so that they don't leave poop everywhere!

No thats a good thing, after all thats what they're bred for.

You should be proud! Westies and other terriers were bred as ratters and vermin catchers. While only a few dogs still are able to work for their original purpose today, there is actually an event created to foster those natural capabilities in terriers and Dachshunds; it's called Earthdog, and it's a blast! My Dachshund has competed a few times and absolutely loves it. You should look into it for your dog, since she seems to have the natural ratting ability!

So again, be proud of your little ratter!

No its not wrong. That's the dogs nature, to hunt and kill for food. There's nothing wrong with that as long as its not killing other people's pets, or hurting people.

HAHAHAHA, no its not wrong. perhaps you should reward it. maybe even learn something from it

No, its just a part of nature, the mouse had it coming, it knows perfectly well to beware of predators, and predators know they can do that, it is a way of life.
It's a good thing he did, terriers are bred for that.
The way I see it, this is a cycle. Your terrier kills a mouse, but one day, when he is deceased and you bury him, his body helps the plants grow and allows the mice to live, so it doesn't matter if they kill things, although if you dislike it you can always try to train it out of him, although it is hard and I wouldn't suggest it if you wanted a terrier in the first place, cause thats what they do!

Terriers are SUPPOSED to kill vermin! My dog actually caught a squirrel yesterday, every time I said "Good Boy Sampson!!!" His tail wagged faster! I praise my dogs when they kill animals they should.

That's basically praising murder. In front of your very eyes.
If it was a human killing another human you'd think differently, wouldn't you?
Thumb me down, it's the truth. Human's morals are fucked.
