So I’m rescueing a dog from a shelter. I’ve narrowed it down to three dogs. There all really cute and I’m not sure which one would be best for me!!
1. Gary. Three year old purebred westie. Didn’t have much of a description about hime but he looks adorable!!
2. Detour. Two years old. He’s a complete mutt! I have no idea what he is. He’s a sort of ruby color and smaller and looks like maybe some sort of spaniel chihuahua mix. (maybe a cavalier king charles?)
3. Meata. One year old dashchund mix. She’s a really cute red floppy eared girl!
My family would prefer something smaller, that doesnt shed too much. We are pretty active. I will be walking the dog everyday. AT LEAST once a day. The dog will be left alone for six hours a day during the school year, but I have all summer to train it. Please helpp!! which dog would you get and which one do you think I should get??
Yes i know that i need to go and meet the dogs, but they’re in a foster home so i have to schedule to meet them and it’s going to be hard to schedule to meet three of them. So i want to see which one i think would be the best, meet it, and if i dont ‘connect’ with it, i will schedule to meet another one. Thankks:D
i wouldnt recommend the chihuahua. they can be pretty temperamental sometimes. dont be fooled by the dogs sizes, the smaller ones are usually higher maintenance. if you must pick from these 3, i would say the dachshund. but do a little research on the breeds and make sure you are compatible and ready for the responsibility. i mean i dont know…maybe the chihuahua IS perfect for you!

you should really just meet the dogs and see which one you are compatible with.

i like mutts, but chihuahuas are pretty mean. dachsunds live a LONG time and are very trainable. Gary sounds pretty cool, go with gary.

The dashchund you know more about and a friendly dog

i would get detour for the simple fact that mutts tend to be healthier…..if u think about it, pure bred dogs are more likely to be inbred, so they can have physical problems and mental retardation….mutts dont really have that problem, and they tend to also live a bit longer…….

Go to the shelter and meet these dogs with your whole family. Spend time with them. You can’t know which is right for you without meeting them in person and spending some time interacting with them. Take them each for a walk, play with them a bit, see how they interact with you. When you find the ‘right’ dog for your family, you will know it- it will be the one you can’t bear to leave behind. It may turn out that none of these three dogs are compatible with you at all once you meet them.

Spend time with each dog individually. Most shelters will allow you to take the dogs for a walk. Walk each one, again individually, and see which dog interacts with your family better. Then make a family decision on which dog gets on better with you and your family and fits your lifestyle best.

You ask what dog is right for you, but don’t tell much about you and your situation. Also you don’t say much about the temperament of the dogs, just what they look like.
Take the time to get to know the dogs. Go to the shelter and spend as much time as you can with each, involving as many family members as you can. Then make your decision based on that. Think of it as interviewing for the position of family dog.

At the shelter you can ask the staff if they can let the dog out fr you and see how their fur is, etc, their size, how they play, and just interact with them and see if you both enjoy it.
