I have a West Highland Terrier 1 1/2 year old. We adopted him from Wisconsin from a Westie Rescue. We found out he was born in a puppy mill
. He now lives with my family and I in Chicago.
But, the problem is he gets an extreme fishy odor at his rear; SUDDENLY. We have no idea where it comes from. We then take him outside to do his duties. Then it mostly goes away.
If anyone knows where this comes from (the rear, but WHERE) and how to prevent it. THANKS!
It is prob his anal glands.
they are located by his butt.
You can take him to a vet or groomer and have them expressed.
If he is constantly having problems with them your vet may recommend that you have them removed surgically.

Sounds like your dog has gas.

bad gas. Are you feeding him table scraps? Maybe just stick to dog food and see if it gets better.

It may be his anal glands need to be cleaned out. Have you spoken to the vet about it? The vet will be able to tell you if he is "stopped" up back there.

Take him to the vet. Dogs have anal glands that can occasionally become infected or blocked. Usually, if they're not drained, it produces a skunky smelling odor. Here are some websites about anal glands in dogs, if you want to learn more:

There are some websites that instruct you on how to clean the anal glands out yourself, but I would let the professionals do it, just in case they're infected or something serious like that.

It may be the anal glands, or bad gas can be caused by a sensitivity to his food. Grains can cause gas and digestive upset.

It's his anal glands. Dog usually express them when they go potty. It is to mark territory. This is a great site on glands & what they are & how to express them.

Read this site & be sure next time he is getting groomed ask the groomer to express them. He might need a lil more fiber in his diet to help but glands are a common problem in smaller breeds.
