Do you know where I can rescue a dog?

I live in southern California, near LA. I'm looking into adopting a small dog, preferably a westie. I'm not extremely picky on the breed but I definitely don't want a chihuahua. Does anyone know where I can look to rescue/adopt a small dog? I've looked at the pound and I'm keeping them in mind but I also want to know where else to look (besides the newspaper, craigslist, etc).
I've looked on Pet Finder and found quite a bit of stuff. I'm not looking for a puppy because I know they get adopted pretty easily. I'm hoping to find a dog 1-3 years old. I was curious if anyone answering this question knew of a rescue shelter/group.

Try a shelter where they put dogs to sleep after a certain period of time not being adopted. Try the pound or the Humane Society. They'll probably be your best bet. Keep in mind, your pickings of small dogs may be slim & it's highly unlikely that you'll get a purebred (still possible). I personally wouldn't waste time with Craigslist… often it's just a bunch of irresponsible people who wouldn't spay/neuter their pets looking to turn a quick dollar on the puppies. So you're really not "rescuing" them. Puppies are easy to adopt. It's adult dogs who really need your help.

Try http://www.petfinder.com/index.html you can search by breed, size, age, sex, and around your area and it will give you results for those pets that are up for adoption in your area.

Try to find groups where people with Westies get together, and local agility/rally groups, etc. They often know of breed-specific rescue groups. Good luck - but remember, you'll fall in love with whatever dog you get!

Enter your zip code, "dog" and the size and/or type dog you want, and they will come up with all the dogs that fit your description starting with those close to you and branching out to farther away. These are all rescue dogs.

Another resource that can work, but might take time, is call some Westie breeders in your area and tell them you are looking to rescue an older Westie, and if a Westie mix would be okay. They will steer you to a Westie rescue, and if they hear of a good dog who has "bounced" out of his home, they will keep you in mind. To find the Westie breeders, google first for a club in your area — clubs generally try very hard to be reputable good folks. Secondarily, google "westies" and the name of your town, or the nearest large town. Good luck! And bless you for wanting to adopt a rescue.

There are rescues for most breeds. Try http://www.westierescueca.com/

Or search for "(whatever breed) rescue" in Yahoo.

It is absolutely possible to get a pure bred dog at the shelter too. I volunteer for rescues saving pure bred Basset Hounds from the shelters on a regular basis.

You might want to consider adopting a dog from a shelter house. Check this out.
