I have a 14 week old westie puppy (male) and am wondering if it would be a good or bad idea to take on an older bitch aswell?
The older bitch has always lived with another dog and has apparently been stressed since its death. She is currently in a rehoming centre. The thought behind this is that they will keep each other company whilst I am out. What are the implications of owning two dogs??
I would be grateful for any advice!!
Many thanks!!
Two dogs is not really different than one dog… if they get along. Try an introduction and see what happens. Being that the older dog is a female she may well see the little one as hers and take on a nuturing role. Not always but sometimes. A meeting in a neutral place will be best. The puppy will adapt to anything well.

Sandras answer is good. Thank you for considering an older dog with less chances of placement.

Good plan. Fantastic place to get a pet from.
I have an 8 year old b****, she was lonely so I took on an 11 month old b**** puppy. They are both Whippets. It was the best plan I ever had. Both are happy & entertain each other playfighting & racing around like loonies, old lady is having a 2nd childhood. No serious fights or anuthing, will be having the puppy done when she ihas had her first season.
Best way of introducing them is to take your dog to the centre & let them sniff each other etc., You will know right away if she is the right friend for him. As long as they are both house trained (crate training in progress) you should have no trouble. Final tip you cannot have a favourite dog, they must be treated the same. I give each one 20 mins a day on it’s own. Good luck & enjoy their company.

I would never introduce another dog, while I am training a puppy. I guess you have to decide for yourself how much mental stress you can deal with. You have the demands of a puppy and the demands of a stressed out older dog. If the older dog gets stressed and pees in the house, you might undo all the work you did on potty training your puppy. I wouldn’t do it, but you have to do what is best for you.
