Can you guys give me a list of things I need to get for my new Westie puppy?

Dont just say food tell me what types of foods and vitamins are good for him.

The best thing I did. I signed my dog up and took her to training classes. It really does make them a happier pet if they have been trained to understand what is expected of them and what you are saying when you tell them something. But healthwise. The main thing you MUST do is keep up with heartworm meds. It is very important. Good luck with your new family member.

A good rule of thumb is to use a branded dog/puppy food. Tinned or dry, the choice is yours. Good dog/puppy food will have a chart on the back to show how much the dog needs, based on their weight and age. It makes feeding easy, although sometimes it takes a few weeks for them to get used to a change. A bad thing to do is to follow a fad diet based on whimsy, because like in humans, these always fail.

An appropriate collar and lead will also be vital and I expect you will need a brush/or comb for grooming for a Westie (little and often is best).

When you next see the vet you should ask for a demo of how to clean teeth, remove ticks, treat for fleas, trim claws and brush teeth, it will cost you, but nowhere near as much as if you don't learn how to do these chores.

Lastly, remember, a little professional training can go a long way and will help you feel more confident about stepping out with your dog, because the key to good behaviour lies with regular strenuous exercise, even for a smaller dog like a Westie. (Which is, in fact a working dog)

That is just some of the practical things.

1. Food is a balance of how you want to feed and how much you want to spend. When it comes to dog food, choose your type (dry, wet, raw, or a mix) and a price range and than read the ingrediants. Your looking for a) meat that is not meat by-product and b) as few grains as possible. The same goes for treats. Remember, just because a food is good for your dog doesn't mean that he'll find it tasty, so you may need to try a few different food before you get something that he likes.

2. Leash, collar, and tags; food bowl, water dish, food storage container. Grooming combs - round bristle brush and small metal brush are recommended. Puppy shampoo and nail clippers if you plan to bath and trim the pup yourself instead of taking him to the groomers.

3. Tick, flea, worm, and ear infection preventatives.

4. An appointment at the vet to get him checked over. The vet can further advise on assorted preventatives.

5. Get your pup a bed. Be this a pillow, a blanket, or a comfy cage, your pup needs a place of his own.

5.1 Whatever you choose for a bed, a cage or a crate is recommended in case you need to give your pup a time out, be it to keep him out of way for some reason or to allow wet for to dry if you take him out while it's raining or snowing.

6. Toys. Start your pup off with a few different toys and see what he likes, then get more toys of a similar type. Puppies like to chew though, so I'd recommend tough toys like a mini kong.

7. Socialization. Hold off on this until your pup has had his preventive shots. After that, socialize him, be it at a dog park or puppy training classes or just with a friend's dog. Good early socialization will teach your pup good doggy manners, which will help him play nice with people too.

If you are going to crate train you will need a crate adequately sized for him. You will need a good quality puppy food, either ceramic or stainless feeding and watering bowls, a nice comfy pet bed, some toys to entertain him (like some sturdy squeaky toys), toys for him to teeth on (Kong brand is most durable and safe), healthy treats, brush and comb, & a good collar and leash. If you plan on grooming your puppy yourself you will need a good shampoo and conditioner, toothbrush and toothpaste, nail clippers, ear cleaner, etc. You may also want to give him a daily vitamin called Nutri Cal which is available at pet stores. Nutri Cal is also good to keep around in case your dog for some reason loses its appetite or has a stomach upset. You may also want to purchase some pee pads as an aid in housebreaking. Last but not least and the most important, lots of love. patience, and attention!!
