my puppy hates being brushed.he tries to bite the brush and doesn't let me get near his body with it. it is a wire brush because he is a westie. i try to give him treats, and after he finishes the treat, he goes nuts again!!! hold him down, he makes the really cute innocent "mph" sound and slips out!!! he is highly against the brush, but westies need grooming!!!
haha my shih tzu does the same thing
The brush is a negative experience for him.
When you are about to brush him you should first make sure: you have a calm energy.
Then massage him so he calms down too.
When he is calm brush him again but brush him gentle. If he goes nuts try it again.
Because if you don't he will learn if he goes nuts he won't get brushed. However if he doesn't go nuts give him a treat so he knows if he lets you brush him he gets rewarded.
Good Luck with you Westie!

You need to give him rawhide or something that lasts longer than a treat to keep him occupied.

sounds like you are doing good, reward him for good behavior and dont give up! Like you said, westies need grooming and if you take a puppy to the groomer who isnt brushed and is matted to the skin you will have a bald puppy!

Don't give up….he is just seeing how far he can push you. Remember you are the boss and he does need brushing. Eventually he will get use to it especially if you don't give in. Try not brushing so hard, do it gently, while rubbing his tummy and see if that works then Reward him, like you have been doing, after each time he lets you brush him. No brush ~ No treat. Good luck.

maybe you may be brushing a little to hard.

My Poms are the same way.
I give them a quick once over with a pin brush, to get the big tangles out. Then I go back with a slicker brush to finish them.
They have a "sixth sense" that I'm about to brush them and hide under the bed.

I can't believe the answers you're getting … give the dog a rawhide and blahblahb … BS. Don't treat the dog for acting like a moron.
There's a time for treating and a time for teaching a dog that enough is enough and it will behave. Don't tolerate that kind of behavior. Don't reward that kind of behavior. Give voice corrections when the dog is messing up and get the job done.
Don't futz around with this or your dog will be difficult to groom for it's entire life. MAKE the dog behave by giving voice corrections, and by physically holding it in place. Or take it to the goomer and have them do it.

Yes they don't like the wire brush . start of softely don't dig into him like you would combing your hair. there skin is senstive all they feel is pricks and says ouch mommy that hurts so go gingerly stop and praise him kiss him then carry on another part of his body talking to him always keeping his mind off the brushing the paws especially he won't like again go softely kissing each paw saying what a good boy conforting him giving him trreats. and do it religiously so he will get accustomed to it always making sure he gets treats so he associates this with treats and fun time and loving times. dont' go hard on him. better to do it regularly so it wont' knot up . Mine use to lick my hand to say like mum it hurts stop and hug him kiss him and then talk softely give him treats and go softely again.
