Which Dog Do You Prefer: Scottish Terrier (Scottie), West Highland Terrier (Westie), or Miniature Schnauzer?

We had a Miniature Pinscher (Min-Pin) that died this summer and we are considering a new dog. I know terriers love to bark and dig and can be strong willed, but I love the way these breeds look, small but hearty, and full of personality! I know these breeds must be regularly groomed and clipped, but it's worth it for their low-shedding quality, which is perfect for our 6 year old asthmatic son. We also have an enthsiatstic 7 year old daughter who would love to brush out a dog daily. Any thoughts on your favorite: Scottie, Westie or Mini Schnauzer, would be appreciated.

I was going to ask the exact question and then I saw yours!!! I am going to look at a Westie tomorrow for my 2 daughters- I think it is my favorite. The only thing is that the schnauzer doesn't shed as much. The Westie always looks like it is smiling…very pleasant personality. They are all adorable but the Westie is my pick!

Go to shelter and see which one you find first.

We had a scottie. Scotties have a fiery personality and bond with their families. I found though that she would chase the kids and try to nip their bums, I think she thought she was keeping them in line or was herding them. She never did it and caused injury or pain, it was more like when they play and grab or bite gently.
I don't recommend schnauzers, they can get very temperamental and nippy with kids.
Westies are a bit more family friendly, then Scotties #2. I would not even personally consider a scnauzer. I've seen too many kids get bitten by them.
Have you considered chinese cresteds? They are excellent for people with allergies and asthma and don't shed. They are playful and silly. (I know, I breed them, and pugs.) Pugs are great with kids, but not with allergies or asthma. They are little shedding machines!

Westies don't really have to be groomed that often. I have one and 2 Cairn Terriers and I brush them every other day, give them a bath once a month (or more if they get muddy) and I trim them about once a year and I do that myself! I have also had a Scottie. SO, out of those 3, Westie would be your best bet! They are great with kids as long as they are raised with them! Schnauzers do require ALOT of grooming!

Understand that each of these dogs is very different (not just their appearance). They each have different temperaments, exercise requirements and health issues.
Talk to owners of each of these breeds and you'll learn enough to decide which would make a good family member in your home.

Schnauzers are cute and very entertaining but if they get out the door, they're gone! They are too high maintenance, IMHO.

I really don't know the other two breeds but have known people with Scotties. They seem to be a bit calmer which might work with small children.

As the other poster stated, go to a shelter. Too many need homes!

    Good luck

I had a westie for 12 years. He did grow up with the kids so therefore it was ok..i wouldnt reccomned getting an adult westie with children get one as a puppy let him grow with the kids… We had originally got him because of the family having allergies and they are supposed to be better for that..noone got sick. He was a great dog and not a huge shedder. Unlike the lab we have now!

I've owned all three and although Scotties and Westies are great pets,I prefer the Mini Schnauzer. All are very smart pets, but Westies and Scotties are pronged to allergies.

Every dog on the planet is perfect and wonderful….why choose just one? Get as many as you can take care of. I personally love Bull Mastiffs, Great Danes, Giant Schnauzers, german Shepards, Rottwiellers, Boxers, Greyhounds and more. Whille you may think these dogs are too large for you, I am quite certain you and your children would have great fun. I suggest going for a mix of small and large dogs. How many dogs were you thinking of getting? Good Luck on your search.

    ********NONE!!!********
You are ABSOLUTELY****WRONG**** about their grooming requirements!!
ALL are supposed to be ***HAND-STRIPPED!!!!***
    ********NOT CLIPPERED!!!!!!********
Clippering RUINS the coat !!!!!PERMANENTLY!!!!! They also look like SHI-T!!!!

    I've met hundreds of all 3!! Groomed,etc.

The second 2 you mention are TOO POPULAR!!! Far too much ABSOLUTE ***CRAP*** is out there cuz GREEDY IDIOTS are breeding ANY *POS* w/plumbing!!

Scotties are less common but can be NASTY as cat's piss!!!!

You're "missing the boat" on the BEST terrier-****BORDER TERRIER!!!!!*****
Go read the BREED STANDARD!!!! I personally do *NOT* like kids & a Border is the ONLY breed I'd reccomend for them.Only ever met ONE Border that wouldn't have LOVED "a kid of their own"!!! Small, sturdy, sane,MINIMAL ***STRIPPING!!***-no long, nasty, dirty"skirts"!

REMEMBER!!! Border TERRIER-NOT the B.collie!! (YUCK!)
