How Long Will My Westies Hair Take to Grow Back?

I took my westie to be groomed as he had a few matted clumps of hair on his tummy i thought he may need to have that clipped he has come out like a different dog he has been completely clipped so short you can see pink through his hair and has a very small skirt left approx 1 1/2 inches long he looks awful and i dont even want to take him out now any ideas how long it will take to grow out. I am gutted.

Probably about 6 weeks.

If you keep the dog groomed regularly, then the groomer will have no need to do this next time. It is fairer to the dog when to clip it off the coat has become terribly matted.

Once clipped, the coat is never the same. This breed should be hand stripped.

My Scottie’s stomach was shaved for ultrasounds and surgery. Her hair grew back at a rate of 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch per month. So, in 3-4 months the hair should be about 1 inch longer. It takes time, but it should grow back.

He is NOT a different dog, he is YOUR dog relieved of pinching, pulling mats, thank you very much to the groomer who dealt with that mess and was able to leave some skirt at all!

It is up to you to let the groomer know that you don’t want him real short on his back. You can tell them to only use a number 4 or 5 on his back. They probably used a 7 or 10 and if so, the 10 is way too short and should not have been used. But his back fur will be nice and fully white again in 4 to 6 weeks. As far as his skirt goes, that will take longer, from 8 to 12 weeks. You don’t want a Westie skirt dragging the ground anyways, that is totally improper for the breed. Actually, 2 to 3 inches long is plenty to be left on a Westie to show off their body outline to the fullest.

A westie needs to be groomed every 8 weeks so that his fur doesn’t mat and so that there is not such a shock when you have him groomed once a year. When having him groomed every 8 weeks, you can have an understanding with your groomer as to exactly how you want your dog to look.
