Getting a Westie Groomed?

I just got a westie puppy, when i take him to the groomers what do I get? Does anyone know of a good groomer in west texas?

Ask local westie breed club or your vet for referrals – both know who in the area does good grooming. You simply tell the groomer you want your puppy groomed in westie standard clip or however you like. Just be sure to be -specific- absolutely specific about what length you want.

Your puppy will need to have had all of his shots before you can have him groomed. You will need to bring proof of vaccinations on your first trip. When you call to make an appointment with a groomer, please be sure to tell them that it will be your puppy’s first grooming. That way, the groomer can schedule your pup’s appointment so there is plenty of time to slowly and carefully groom your normally squirmy, wiggly puppy. Most groomers get booked up well in advance so please remember to call well ahead of time for an appointment.

If you aren’t sure what a Westie clip looks like, get a book from your local library or bookstore so you can see photos of it. There are also tons of books about dogs at http://www.dogwise.com (Dogwise).

One way to find a groomer is to ask a friend or neighbor who has a dog that gets groomed regularly where they take their dog. You can find groomers listed in the yellow pages of your phone book, too.

You have a wirey-haired terrier. The preferred method of grooming is hand-stripping (plucking) the blown coat. This keeps the coat in its optimum condition and is required if the dog will be in the show-ring. Hand stripping is the best….

Now, in reality, if you have a pet Westie, you can opt for having the coat clippered. Using clippers on the coat "breaks" it and causes it to soften. It really isn’t a big deal if your dog will never be in the show ring. Since you haven’t gotten him clipped yet, study which method of grooming you would prefer. Hand-stripping can be very costly.

We don’t have show dogs, so my Scottie is groomed with clippers and scissors. We learned to do this at home. I prefer the coat to be a little longer and not "buzzed" over the back. Also, many groomers don’t do the tail correctly and "hula skirt" the furnishings. Find a good groomer and do not be afraid to be very specific with your details on how you want your dog groomed. Enjoy the puppy time–it passes too quickly!
