Price Range on a Westie show dog. Please help?

I am very very interested in getting a West Highland White Terrier pup as a show dog. Ive just done LOTS of research on the breed and standards for the breed. I plan to find a reputable breeder. But before I get to much into this I'd like to know what the average costs are for buying one. I would imagine quite high. Now even if I find a suitable Westie breeder, most probably have top quality "pet" and "breed" dogs. But is it easy to find a top quality show dog from a breeder? Thank you in advance, and please dont harp at me telling me its not a good idea, I have done SO much research on these dogs, but I couldnt find a pricing on show dogs.

The first thing you will have to do is contact the West Highland White Terrier Club of America and have them put you in contact with the reputable breeders in your area.

Second, do ALL the research you can on the breed! When you talk to a show breeder, you are going to want to know as much as possible about Westies, because believe me, the breeder will know everything about them.
Third, it is VERY difficult to get a show dog if you have no experience in showing. The breeder will certainly want you to co-own the dog with them. That way they have control over the dog so that you can't just buy it to say that is a show dog & then breed it.
It is perfeclty normal to co-own a show dog that you purchase. I started showing dogs when I was 17, and I co-owned the first several dogs I purchased with their breeders. The breeder will give you LOTS of advice & guidance & definitely make the whole process easier on you. Believe me, if a breeder even agrees to sell you a show puppy & wants to co-own it with you, consider yourself very lucky because we are very picky!
You will have to agree to either show it yourself, which is very difficult & especially so in Westies because they have very tough grooming requirements. Or, you will have to have a professional handler, or the dog's breeder, show it to it's championship.
Either way, showing is EXPENSIVE, so you have to be prepared for this.
As far as not being able to find a price for a show dog, this is the norm. I don't know of any people who breed & show their dogs who advertise prices for show puppies. That is because we normally only place our show puppies with people we know, who already have experience in showing.
We generally do not sell "show" puppies. Even though many puppies SHOULD be shown, there aren't that many show homes out there. So if we can't keep all of them to show ourselves, or place them with fellow breeders who show, then they are spayed or neutered and sold as pets.
If you are VERY interested and none of the things I've mentioned turn you off, then you might be right to show a dog.
If so, start contacting the breeders that the Westie club puts you in touch with & start going to local dog shows & meeting people.

If you click on your state, you can find the shows in your area. That way you can talk to the Westie people there & discuss with them.
As far as price - every dog is different, every breeder is different, and every breed is different.
For MY breed, we pay between $2,000 for $5,000 for a show puppy. I would think that Westies are about the same. Good luck to you!

You will just have to contact breeders and ask them. I dont personally know prices of Westies, but I'd have to guess you are looking at paying at least $2,000-3,000 or more for a show dog.. depending on the bloodlines. If its from a Westminster / Eukanuba CH or from imported lines you may be paying more.

Its possible to find a show dog, but reputable breeders are leery to hand over show potentials to someone who doesnt have themselves known as a handler. Do expect to possibly have some kind of co-ownership contract.

I was told that it is easier to seek out a male than a female. Breeders often reserve females for themselves and for other trusted show breeders/handlers. As someone who is not well-known.. it will be easier for you to obtain a male.

You can't find a price on a show dog because you don't show dogs. You aren't entitled to buy one of the few puppies produced that potentially qualify as show dogs. No matter how much money you pay, it's not worth the risk to the breeder that you would not show the dog, or if you did, your inexperience would cause the dog to never win. Try an average westie from breed rescue.

I have read that it is easier to get a pet quality dog from a good breeder and do performance sports with the dog, obedience, agility, flyball.. therapy (etc) at first and then they will be more trusting to hand over a show prospect.

I'll be interested in hearing some responses too, since I'm going to be getting into showing with the Tibetan Mastiff… and I have no previous show experience.

I cannot even compare the research in pricing I've done with the Tibetan Mastiff because these dogs cost regularly 3000 even at pet quality, however I would imagine it would be around 1500-2000. and most likely a co-ownership until the dog reaches it's championship, then its easier sailing after! You're also going to be competing with other handlers/breeders for a show pup, you're looking at being on a waiting list for awhile.. unless you get lucky!
