I'm 13 and am looking too get a dog, I'm thinking of getting a westie coz of it's size but i have 4 cats and I have read that they might chase cats… any info you can tell me about this breed??? I also have 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Thanks. xxx
They're great I have one. They don't shed and mine doesn't bark. It's playful but it's also relaxed. Mine is usually by my side. They can be very active but they can be laid back if u want them to.

Great little dogs, lots of character.

All dogs are likely to chase cats! Its not just west highland terriers.
However, west highland terriers generally have very kind temperaments.
As long as they are trained properly, the dog will be lovely.
Also, the dog is good for people with asthma and/or allergies.
But how big is your house?! You already have 5 siblings and 4 cats.
The house could get very busy, and you must remember that dogs are a lot harder to handle and look after than cats are!!

they're quite sweet, but you cant gauge whether or not a dog will chase cats by their breed, at least not in my experience. my aunt used to have a westie who my dad nicknamed "the vicious little brute" because it always went for him. never anyone else though lol, just my dad. didn't like him i guess

all dogs may chase cats. You have to train a dog – good luck

They're very active and like to chase. They are also typically very vocal. Anything in the terrier family would probably not be the best bet with cats. I'd stick to spaniels if you want a purebred, but a mixed breed is probably your best bet. They would be lacking a lot of the hunting instincts that have been bred into European breeds for centuries. Ask at a local shelter, and they'll be able to identify dogs that will likely be very small. They may also have young-adult dogs that have come from homes with cats and are already used to them. Good luck!

We had a pedigree one for 13yrs, and as our Vet said, it had developed the usual traits of pure breeding, having no tear ducts, so we had to administer jell tears everynight, and an itchy skin needing constant anti-biotics. In all, it cost us over £1.500 in Vet fees, but it was a lovely dog.
