Is a Westie (West Highland White Terrier) Hypoallergenic?

We would like a small dog that is hypoallergenic and we really like westies, please answer!

No.
No dog is truly "hypoallergenic".

Everyone's allergies are triggered by different aspects of the dog, some it may be the dander, some the saliva….if you are allergic to dogs, meet with some Westie owners and see how you individually do with them. You may be fine, you may not.

I would also see your doctor and explain the situation, they may have to increase or start you on new allergy meds so that you can adapt better to owning a dog.

Anything with skin, hair or fur is not 100% hypoallergenic. Anything with skin, hair or fur create dander.

No dog is hypoallergenic. Breeds that shed lightly like Westies have less dander that cause allergies but still have some dander and many people will still be allergic to them.

    NO!

That saying is completely a bogus term. There is no such thing as "hypoallergenic".

That term means that the dog has hair (which Westie's don't) instead of fur. Causing less shedding, a hair-type coat, and for some people it cuts on allergies. But that is usually not the source of where allergies come from. People who are allergic to dogs are allergic to their dander, which comes from the skin! So unless you can find a dog without skin, it's NOT hypoallergenic.

Think about it, there are many people out there who are allergic to dogs, but not cats. Or people who are allergic to just cats but not dogs. That's because it has nothing to do with the fur, but the dander they create.

So if you want a dog that won't shed much, then get a "hypoallergenic" dog. But it won't stop the allergies most likely. And Westies aren't a breed of dog with hair. They have fur.

    Good luck!

I've never heard of a Westie being hypoallergenic, but what i do know is that they are very prone to having allergies themselves. If you decide to get one (great dogs) but be aware u may have to deal with the headaches of an allergic dog.

I have a Westie!!!! Please get one!!!!
I don't think that dogs can be completely hypoallergenic but my neighbor is allergic to dogs and she is fine with my westie but just comes up with a slight itch but she takes a tablet everyday because of it. Its not the dogs fault your allergic so dont pick a breed on weather its hypoallergenic.

no dog is hypoallergenic despite what some people say. Most people who are allergi to dogs are allergic to the dander and all dogs have dander.

Westie's hardly ever shed. I have severe asthma and I have no problems with mine. But, please be advised that the issue is not their coat type… its their extreme hyperactivity. I always joke with people and say that mind seems to be on drugs because he has a never satisfiable urge to jump, dig, and act like a maniac.

They are not good for small children. They're nice to them, sure. But they want to jump on everyone. If you have cats, get a puppy and introduce them early on (8 weeks and up). Terriers are not cat friendly by God's creation of the breed, and proper introduction to small children and cats is essential. Mine is fine with cats now. But only "his" cats. The neighbor's cat's I would not trust him around, as he has gotten one of ours by the skin on her back and pulled her off the wooden fence to "play".
