My westie is almost 9 and he is starting to slow down a bit. For this reason my parents think its a good idea to get another younger dog to try and speed him up a bit. Also because we want another dog. Im not 100% sure because im worried about what it will do to our original dog. He is very territorial. We would probably get a female rescue dog either a young pub or else a few months old. Any opinions??
I would definitely do a pre-warm up between the two dogs, like bringing your Westie along when you meet one of the future pups. If they get along, you’ll know thats the right one

Lots of people introduce new puppies to older dogs. That doesn’t mean they always get along, but of those I’ve seen, they at least coexist. The older dog may become cranky & nip at the puppy if the puppy gets on its nerves, but the puppy should eventually get the idea.

If you are thinking of getting a dog with a very territorial dog this is a bad idea. He’s old number one and will be very cranky. You don’t want to remember him as being an old cranky fart when he dies. Hold off until your pet has decided to go. You’ll put a lot of stress on him.

I have a 14 yr old westie bitch and introduced her to our new westie (Not a pup he’s 9) They get along fine but they do not play together or interract much, but they are quite content in each others company, Just don’t expect them to frolic together.
