West Highland Terrier puppy care is no different than any other puppy care. Like all other puppies, it first of all needs to be loved and cared for. The family initially will need to interact with it as often as possible without carrying it too much because by nature these dogs do not like to be treated like lapdogs. They have very strong personalities that would sometime amuse you because they contradict to the sweet looks that these puppies are blessed with.
West Highland White Terriers Can Be a Real Handful
If not handled properly, this dog can be a real handful. They need to be trained well from very early stages of life to know, understand and obey basic commands. Be careful to choose a West Highland Terrier puppy with moderate temperament if you have small children at home. These dogs may believe that the small children are not part of the owners but its siblings for which they may playfully nibble or bite them. It is imperative not to play roughly with them under any circumstances lest it brings out the dormant wild hunter traits in it.
The West Highland Terrier puppies will need to be inoculated as per the recommended schedule and regularly de-wormed as per the veterinary doctor’s advice. Their feeding usually is about three to five times a day, consisting mostly of dry food (prepackaged varieties) or a mixture of dry and wet food. Try as best as you can to restrain from overfeeding it even though their sweet face will make this hard to do.
The West Highland Terrier puppy’s grooming is routine. These dogs have a double coat – one wiry and hard, and the other soft, dense and fluffy – which needs to be brushed at least once in three days. It is a moderate shedder and its coat is usually drier than other dogs, for which they do not need to be bathed too often. Bathing them once a month or once in two months would be just fine.
There are other things that would be included in West Highland Terrier puppy care, i.e. health supplements and regular skin check ups since this dog is prone to skin infections. Ensure that there are no parasites crawling on his skin by brushing it with an anti-flea powder at least once a month.
It is advisable to make a list of what is needed for your puppy before you get it home. Preparing for your West Highland Terrier puppy should include quite a few changes in your present way of life and its always better to be ready.
