How Do I Stop My Puppy From Biting?

I have a 12 week old west highland white terrier puppy (westie) and I was wondering how to stop her constant nipping problem. Will this go on forever? I read that terriers like to nip when they are excited too. Thanks.

i had the same problem and i got the perfect solution. go to petsmart or something and they have this spray stuff and the one i got is called bitter apple, it isnt harmful to the dog but they will stop after a few sprays of it. now whenever my dog even sees the bottle he runs away.

if you dont want to buy that you could always take a spray bottle and fill it with water, and whenever the dog is biting, just spray it in the face. it is not as effective though.

you can't puppies bite because they teeth are growing so when they grow up they will have strong teeth. All puppies bite.

my pet trainer says to yelp loudly as if it really really hurts, so that the puppy understands that he is hurting or that what he is doing is bad.
Try speaking to a Petsmart pet trainer.

All dogs require training. You need to reward for good behaviour and discourage bad behaviour.
Dogs do not speak English therefore you don't get a lot of feedback from them. If a dog nips or does something that you don't wish it to do, you must relate the bad behaviour to punishment. You must do this immediately or the dog will be confused as to why it is being punished.
For nipping, take the dog and push it down on its side just as its mother would do and hold it there. With the other hand gently tap it on the nose (top, side, front) and firmly say NO. The nose of dogs is sensitive so be gentle but firm. The dog will associate the annoyance of having its nose tapped with its own behaviour and should stop the behaviour fairly quickly.
Terriers like to ***. All dogs like to and you must let the dog know who is boss or else it will rule you.
Training should be done on short leads, not extendables. You must be in control at all times. The dog will learn from your patterning how to behave. Good Luck.

They'll nip at you for a while. They're teeth are growing right now so they need to chew something. I recomend getting a couple of toys specifically for that. Try to avoid bones, they end up making a mess with little bits of it strewn across the floor.

My own puppy is about to turn one, and we've been using a rolled up magazine a couple of times whenever she bites. Now she stops if she even sees the newspaper.

When the puppy bites you, hold it's mouth closed lightly with your hand and say "no bite". Be consistant doing this with the puppy and he should stop. We always said to our puppies "No, bite… Kisses only" while holding their mouth and now we have 2 dogs that give us kisses all of the time.

puppies are usually teething at that age… and you cant really help them from biting stuff.
my puppy is also biting on everything aroudn her.
try getting her some rubber toys, bones, etc.
when their baby teeth fall out, they will not bite.

Its always best for puppies to not scold them for bad deeds. Not rewarding them is punishment enough, always praise the dog . Dont ever yell or hit the dog. You will end up confusing it if you raise your voice. Just firmly say no within 3 seconds of the bite and have a stoic look on your face. you probably have but if not, try getting some nice chew toys.
