Do West Highland Terriers Need to Have Their Hair Clipped Often?

I am considering getting a Westie puppy for my birthday. Do they need to have their hair trimmed very regularly, or can it just be done 2 or 3 times a year? Also, would a walk outside every day or sometimes every other day be sufficient for exercise along with playing in the house?

No, they look cute as can be in full coat. And if you leave it unclipped it stays nice and wiry and practically waterproof. They do need lots of exercise though. I would walk it every day, not every other day–they are terriers, you know. Keep in mind that Westies are loud barkers, too.

I had a whestie, we only got her groomed once or twice through the year. We didnt get her groomed during the winter because she would get too cold. I would invest in a couple of jackets for her in the winter. Its best to walk her everyday, however if you have another animal that can exhaust him or her than that couldd work.

Trimming is not that essential, I would only do it when the dog seems to be too hot, or is bothered by its fur.
But you do need to brush the fur often to prevent mats.
