West Highland Terriers vs Yorkshire Terriers?

My family is getting our first dog pretty soon, and we have put down a deposit for a Yorkie, but my mom is starting to get nervous. Her friend tells her that Westies are less hyper and much easier to take care of. We found a possible Westie breeder. But our family is allergic to dogs. I know that no dog is actually "hypoallergenic", but which dog will be easier towards our allergies? And which dog do you think is a better choice in general?

A month ago there as a w.h.terrier trotting down the hwy ..I stopped, leaned over to open the passenger door and before I could call it it jumped into my car! We had him for 4 days and he was the sweetest gentle dog!!! never bothered my other dogs..never attacked my cats…he was very mellow! he was not even neutered…he snuck out the fence in our back yard and just came to the front door!…The owners came and got him and said how good he was…This was my first experience with a W.H. terrier..I thought they are great dogs!!

I have a Yorkie. And a silky terrier. My yorkie likes to have attention. she is jumpy but she gets worn out easily. they just need to be trained. I also have really bad allergies and they dont affect me at all with this breed. Also they dont shed which is great. If you have allergies you would get used to the dog breed anyways so it wouldnt matter.

Yorkies are way too frail and fragile for my taste or for the climate I live in. I am not one to have a dog that needs weewee mats in the house, The cat boxes are enough. A Westie is a tough little dog with a coarse coat that can take a rain shower or a few inches of snow in stride. It is a double coat which is why they can take the cold but it means more shedding come warm weather. There are products that you can wipe the dog down with to help the allergy problems and you would probably want to bathe the dog every few weeks to keep dander to a minimum. You can also take allergy meds, there are good ones for animal allergys that are meant to be taken daily and long term. Talk to your allergist about which one to use.

Actually I have German Shepherds but when I am too old to keep up with a big dog I would want a Westie or a Scottie.

I have been around many Yorkies, and far fewer Westies, but I prefer the Westie.
The yorkies tend to be a bit more yappy and have different personality than the Westie.
The westies I have been around have by far been the better temperament dog.
Just my opinion though…I could be wrong. :)

Your mom’s friend obviously did NO research….

Westies are working terriers (as opposed to companion terriers like Yorkies who where bred more for companionship than hunting): they where bred to go to ground after vermin. They have a HIGHER energy level than Yorkies and require a lot more exercise and mental stimulation (IE they need to do things like work, games, etc.) They also have a MUCH higher prey drive and require hand stripping as opposed to the occasional clipping.

Neither breed is known to be "hypoallergenic." Any individual of any breed can cause an allergic reaction – the family has to keep that in mind.

I say go with the Yorkie for a first pet. Westies are great, but only for a slightly more active family.
