If you are serious go through the uk kennel club and get a list of reputable and knowledgeable breeders that produce high quality dogs

A reputable breeder will have genetically sound dogs they will also have KC registered the mum and the dad
they will also be able to go back many generations of blood lines as well on the papers

I don’t know about westies but i do of a reputable breeder through the kennel club that breeds shih tzus and her puppies as well as the parents are hip scored xrayed and looked at by a vet for any problems and are also wormed papered and have there first set of vaccinations

You don’t even know the correct breed name!!! West Highland WHITE Terrier.
How on earth you imagine you can learn anything *here*,asking strangers-on-line,is pathetic. & please, use the spell check feature,eh?

REAL breeders TITLE their REGISTERED stock;BYBs don’t.

west highland terriers can get hip dysplasia, but it is rare :) they are extremely prone to skin problems and eye problems though which are hireditory defects.
I believe yorkies to be healthier overall but they are much more nervous and not as robust as a breed.
If the dog has no paperwork it is not a problem to you personally unless you wish to show your dog but you have no way of finding out about the family history or looking into health or temprament problems! Also people who breed dogs with no papers are unlikely to have followed a good worming routine and your pup could be full of worms which are damaging him inside his body!

Right it is not important that it is KC registered if you don’t wish to show, however the breeders of puppies of KC registered and titled parents are more likely to have had their hips tested and had full help checks, including skin conditions ( which westies are very prone to suffering from)Also if a breeder is not registering they may be having too many litters ( which the KC don’t allow), so if they are not registering then the KC don’t know……so if I were you I would go for a KC reg pup.

Go onto the KC website and look for Westie breeders around Leicestershire, also look at breed shows being held locally (lots of dogs shows were held in Grandby Halls in between Royal Infirmary and the Tigers ground, however that has gone long ago or even the cattle market, but thats a shopping centre and multiplex now )as this will enable you to go and see the westies, talk to the breeders/owners/handers and you can see what you like, find out who is having puppies and often be able to see puppies born previously and being shown, you will also be able to find out who not to deal with and details of any breeder not at the show who may have puppies………….all the westie breeders know each other as they see each other weekly and it enables you to view, talk to and get information from several potential breeders at the same time. Be careful of breeders who breed several breeds, you really want one who is a careful breeder who breeds to keep heir line going, not a breeder who churns out puppies by the score , has several breeds and doesn’t show….and if you are not sure which breed you want you have the opportunity to go and see the Yorkies as well, so you can make your mind up.

You can’t be certain that perfect hip scored parents will produce perfect hip scored pups ( I have had a dog from perfect hip scored parents and found she had got no hip sockets at all…..and at least two others in the litter were the same) although it is more likely the pups will be OK with fully tested parents.

I know lots of breeders in the Leic/Warks area however sorry no ‘good’ Westie breeders who I would recommend.

Ask about testing, what they do for their dog, eye examinations, skin conditions and if they say they are tested, vet checked etc then ask to see the paper proof…………..many of my customers will tell me their dogs are KC registered and bring along what they think as the registration, however it is just a pedigree form. KC registration, needs to be signed by the breeder to transfer registered ownership which you sign as well , you or the breeder will send it off to the KC and you will recieve the KC registration from the KC.

Yes, it is important for a pedigree dog to be KC registered.

You might as well go an get yourself a puppy from a shelter otherwise because without registration, it isn’t a breed.

A non KC reg westie doesn’t exist. It is simply a white mutt that resembles a westie as you cannot prove it is a westie.

You don’t know what exactly is in it ancestry, therefore you cannot know what medical conditions and personality to expect.

Also, the kennel club does provide a level of regulation to ensure breeding practises that take the welfare of the bitch into consideration.

You are only allowed one litter per year, for example.

Peer pressure from other KC breeders also encourages healthy breeding practises.

You shouldn’t take KC reg as a guarantee of quality, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.

You need to ask the breeders about Craniomandibular Osteopathy, which is a very painful bone condition for puppies although it can reduce as they grow.

Then there is KCS (or dry eye) which is a painful eye condition that can be treated but also reaccurs. It is like having sandpaper under your eye lid.

Then there is Seborrhea, a skin condition where the skin thickens and cracks and gets infected.

Then there are these conditiions to consider too:
    Atopy
    Cataracts
    Deafness
    Diabetes mellitus
    Epidermal dysplasia
    Globoid cell leukodystrophy
    Ichthyosis
    Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
Chronic hepatitis – copper associated hepatitis
    Persistent pupillary membrane
    Pulmonic stenosis
    Pyruvate kinase deficiency
    Shaker dog syndrome

I suggest once you have decided on the breed, you contact the breed society and get them to suggest what health tests to insist on and they can also suggest breeders.
