Ok. Getting a West Highland White Terrier This April. Do Not Know What to Research. HELP?

i’m getting a west highland terrier puppy this april or so, but do not know exaclty wpt 2 research. i’m pretty much done on food, where to put their bed, and that kind of stuff, but i’m kinda stuck on wot else i need to do. i’ve been puppy proofing the house aswell. wot else should i do?

The very best place to look up your breed of dog is the AKC ( American Kennel Club) The web site is,

They have a tremendous web site with every type of breed imaginable. All you do is to look up your breed and they will give you more information about your breed than anywhere else possibly can. All they do is dogs.
It will give you answers about the dogs size and weight, lifespan, needs, allergies, legitimate breeders in your area. It will also tell you what your dog was bred for. They also tell you about any genetic diseases that your breed can expect in his older years.
I highly recommend that you visit that web site. You learn everything possible that there is to know about Westies.

Tips for Grooming a West Highland Terrier Puppy?

im getting a new westie puppy today, and i KNOW they need good grooming daily.
I was just wondering if anyone who has this dog or has grooming experience has any tips they’d like to share?

yes i do know the breed is a hand stripped dog, i just wanted extra tips. Most of these were very helpful thank you!

I used to work at a petshop and I groomed a few of the westie puppies we got in. The best thing to use to bathe them is a no tangle puppy shampoo that has aloe in it, or a shampoo that brings out the white in them. Once you get done, dry them off good and for a puppy use a small slicker brush to get the remaining knots out and then use a small baby brush to soften its coat.

i am really scared of my dog possibly getting fleas in the future, cause fleas are just disgusting.
especially for this type of dog: a west highland white terrier (westie), what are the BEST and most EFFECTIVE ways of PREVENTING fleas (and other parasites).

all personal testimony (personal experience) REALLY helps!

Our dog Shiloh has a severe flea allergy, since before we rescued him and his back end is hairless. The vet said it was so severe if he got infested it could kill him so we use Frontline plus for dogs, all you have to do is put the topical medicine between his shoulder blades and he will be all set until you do it next month. Also, get an exterminator out to your house so he can spray the backyard to kill the flea and ticks. Hope this helps.

I’m looking at getting a West Highland Terrier, live in Victoria, Australia, and just wondering where the best place to buy one would be, and what the price range is?

I would avoid pet shops, most puppies sold at Pet shops are from Puppy Mills, if you never heard of one they are like concentration camps for dogs. People who buy from pet shops where the puppies could be from a mill (and they all will say they aren’t) are funding these horrible places. And the puppies almost always end up having very costly health problems from poor living conditions and blood lines. I would look up a reputable breeder or local rescues in your area, a lot of rescues specialize is certain breeds and only that breed. I live in the states so not sure what price would be in Australia, but here they can run anywhere from about $300 to $700 us currency. I hope this helps and good luck!!!

For me, the Westie I had, a LOT. Like, $12,000 one month. He got into everything, so we spent a lot on him for vet bills. Because of sensitive stomachs and common skin allergies, a little bit more than normal then with an average dog.

Did Anyone Take Their West Highland Terrier to the Snow Today?

If so, did they roll around, and could you see them in the snow?
I have a West Highland Terrier and want know what others think.
I forgot to add that this probably only applies to people in the UK, sorry

It would be pretty funny seeing a dog so small and so white blend in w/ the snow, but knowing a Westie, even if he was in the snow, you’d know where he/she was because they are high energy and the make a lot of noise.

I don’t own a Westie, and it doesn’t snow where I live.
