Where to Get Westie Puppies in Massachusetts?

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

I really want a dog and i want a westie puppy. I had a dog before and i know what a responsibility it is. I also want to get a dog that won’t be wicked expensive like over 1,000 dollars. I also need to convince my parents to let me get one. PLEASE HELP!

Aw lucky you! I want a Westie too :)

Anyway, the place to go is the breed club website. Here is the link:

http://www.westieclubamerica.com/

They have a breeder referral list:

http://www.westieclubamerica.com/breederlisting.html

Also, a well-bred pet-quality puppy may be $1,000 dollars. You may want to try a rescue where you could get one for a couple hundred dollars. But vet bills and quality food will cost a good amount of money..

Good luck with your puppy!!

How Do You Deal With an Aggresive, Violent Westie?

Monday, June 13th, 2011

I bought a Westie about a year ago, he is one now and he growls when ever i go near him. If i touch him he will snap and bite me. He don’t listen to me at all(unless i bribe him with treats when he is in a good mood) What can i do?

Professional animal behaviorist or a really good obedience trainer., However, I would not have a dog like that in my home. At at a year old it will only get worse until he does serious harm to someone. Act fast.

When Should I Start Cutting My Westie´S Hair?

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

I have an 8 week westie and want to know when can i cut her hair!
i know she is really young but i live in a very very warm place!
i just want the best for her. thanks!

A Westies hair should never be cut, it should be plucked and it’s a method you need to learn how to do. If you start cutting erratically without knowing what you are doing, your dog is going to look pretty silly.
I start trimming my Westie puppies as soon as they are born, clipping toenails, and trimming ears just to get them used to a grooming procedure. Go to www.dogwise.com and buy a book on how to clip terriers (Westie cuts will be in there) and it will also tell you the equipment needed to do a good job. Don’t worry about heat, your Westies coat will protect her skin from heat and sunburn.

What Was Your Experience Owning a Westie?

Friday, February 11th, 2011

I’m thinking about getting a westie. I use to own a shitzu but he passed away. :[
But I’d just like to know from people how was their experience owning a westie to see if it’d be a good match for me.

I’ve never owned a Westie before but I dogie sat one for 2 weeks and it was a wonderful experience. his name was Salsa and he and I bonded almost immediately. He was very sweet, loving, obedient and extremely possessive of me. I would highly recommend a Westie.

Why Does My Westie Smell So Quickly After Bath?

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

My Westie has started smelling very badly, even a week after bath. He has nothing outside to roll in. He has been licking his legs alot. Vet put him on prednizone.

Check that the type of food you are giving him is good for dogs. Many cheap brands (the ones you can buy in any grocery store or in places like petsmart and petco) contain a lot of corn (now they are listing it as "maize" to try to cover this in a lot of foods). Corn (and wheat, too) in dog foods can cause skin itching, hot spots, paw-licking, ear yeast, allergies, and really bad odor.

See if switching to a higher end, grain-free dog food (Merrick, Eagle Pack, Evo, Orijen, etc) helps your dog. You can also go to making his own food. As long as they have a good source of calcium (Solid Gold Bone Meal is good…follow directions on the package) and protein (meat), the dog should be good to go. Make sure to search for what foods are toxic to dogs, just to be on the safe side.

Good luck!

How Do I Stop My 7 Mth. Old Young Male Cat From Jumping on My Old Westie?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

My Westie will not defend herself. She is a gentle 10 yr. old female. She doesn’t trust being in the same room with the cat.

maybe you could try and distract the cat, play with her/him, tie some elastic on a stick with a bright coloured xmas ball or bell on the end, the cat loves it, sounds like she wants the westie to play bless them both

How Much Should My Six Month Old Westie Weigh?

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

I am wondering…I asked my vet and she says he’s fine but he only weighs 8 lbs. I have another Westie that was about 15 lbs at that age. I am wondering if there may be something wrong with him despite my vet telling me he’s fine. Does anyone else have a six month old at this time that I can compare to?

there’s nothing wrong with him.. if the vet says he’s fine, then he’s fine. :)

What Temperature Is Too Cold to Sleep Out Side for My Westie and Maltese?

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

They were used to be in the house but now they no longer can come inside the house because of my parents. I feel bad, but what’s the temperature for them to feel cold? Female westie thats about 1-2years old and my maltese is about 10months old or a year?(male)
we have the igloo house with fluffy dog mattress..I’m just bit worried about my dogs… any help?

No no no, this is very bad!!! These two dogs MUST LIVE indoors, always! These are two very small breeds, and they CANNOT live outside, they will freeze, or they will get overheated, and both could be fatal. If you can’t convince your parents to let them come inside, you have to take them to a shelter to be re homed. That Maltese is still a puppy, and I HOPE to dog that your Westie is spayed! I can just imagine them unsupervised, outside all day, and then having a litter of pups born outside. Plus, these are both companion breeds!! They are not even part time outdoor dogs.

I gotta tell you, I am very partial to Westies. I really don’t want to see one in this situation. You need to do something about this. If that means being responsible, then you have to take them to a shelter to find good homes where they can live in peoples laps like they are supposed to :(

Whatever the issue is, post a new question and then we can address it the best of our ability.

My Male Westie Is 8 Years Old and 26 Pounds, What Is the Best Wieght for Him?

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

What is the average weight for an older westie, I believe he is getting a bit lazy, we have cut the portions, but not seeing a substabtial change yet.

Usually westies weigh about 15-22 pounds but of course it depends on his height. He may be a healthy weight. You won’t see a substantial loss with just decreasing his intake. Just like humans, they need exercise as well. Take him for walks and cut out treats and/or table scraps. Before putting him on a diet (i.e. diet food) speak with the vet.
