Should I Get a 2nd Dog?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

I currently have a sweet little French Bulldog who is quite lonely during the day when I go to work. I put her in dog daycare a couple days a week so she doesn’t completely lose her mind… but I feel like it might be a better investment to use that dog-daycare money and get a 2nd dog… that way she has an all-the-time companion. I worry the cost of a 2nd dog may be too much… but I could probably manage it.

I’m looking at adopting a rescued Westie — but only if it appears that the two dogs get along after a couple of meetings.

Any thoughts?

In think your being a very considerate pet owner, ignore the first persons answer. Yes I definitely think a second dog would be great company for your little girl. It will be nice for her to have doggy company. All the best x

What Kind of Dog Would Be Good for My Family?

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Ok so we own a west highland terrier. We also have a small child (4) and a cat who is 16. We have been looking at Australian shepherds. We dont want a huge dog but we also dont want another westie or anything as small as a westie. We also wanna rescue. We have a nice size yard and we would be willing to do agility, daily walks…etc. So if anyone has any ideas of a type of dog for us that would be great! Thanks!

An Aussie may not be the dog for you. They like to nip and it’s not because they are mean, it’s their breed. I work at the animal shelter and I can’t tell you have many Aussies we get in because people don’t realize that an Australian shepherds like to nip or herd their children. With one who is 4, I don’t know if an Aussie would be a good idea for you. Maybe..a lab? A lab might be bigger than what you want, but they are great kid dogs. A golden retriever would be another one. Another dog my family had when I was growing up was a boxer who was my best friend and even when I was little, would let me do anything and everything to her.

Do You Know Where I Can Rescue a Dog?

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I live in southern California, near LA. I’m looking into adopting a small dog, preferably a westie. I’m not extremely picky on the breed but I definitely don’t want a chihuahua. Does anyone know where I can look to rescue/adopt a small dog? I’ve looked at the pound and I’m keeping them in mind but I also want to know where else to look (besides the newspaper, craigslist, etc).
I’ve looked on Pet Finder and found quite a bit of stuff. I’m not looking for a puppy because I know they get adopted pretty easily. I’m hoping to find a dog 1-3 years old. I was curious if anyone answering this question knew of a rescue shelter/group.

Try a shelter where they put dogs to sleep after a certain period of time not being adopted. Try the pound or the Humane Society. They’ll probably be your best bet. Keep in mind, your pickings of small dogs may be slim & it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get a purebred (still possible). I personally wouldn’t waste time with Craigslist… often it’s just a bunch of irresponsible people who wouldn’t spay/neuter their pets looking to turn a quick dollar on the puppies. So you’re really not "rescuing" them. Puppies are easy to adopt. It’s adult dogs who really need your help.

My New Rescue Dog Pees When She Is Approached, Gets Scared or Nervous, When I Put a Leash on Her to Take Out.?

Friday, December 18th, 2009

My new rescue dog, a 4 year Westie, pees when she is approached to be taken out side. She does not pee in her crate, nor when she is around in the house. However, when I approach her to put her harness and leash on… she will squat and pee right there. She seems to get scared, but she is excited to go out until that moment. She will have her accident, then get excited again to go out. Medically, she is not having accidents anywhere else in the house, so I don’t believe its a bladder infection. I believe its a training or obediance excercise that must be done, but not sure what to do?
I have an existing 8 yr old female westie, and she sleeps on the bed at night. The new dog sleeps in a crate at night for the time. I’ve heard horror stories about keeping the harness or collar on the dog in the crate. That is the problem, I would keep it on, but don’t want her to have an issue choking or something else. I should be able to put the harness on, but that is when she pees.

Put a collar on her neck and leave it there, let her drag a 6 foot leash around the house and just take that and go out.
This sounds more like a temperament problem then a training one. Hope I helped.

Rescued a Jack Rusell and Need a Little Advice Please?

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

About 3 months ago, my family rescued a Jack Russell/Westie mix. He’s estimated at just over a year old and had probably been in the kennel/rescue place for about 6-7 months (estimated). When I picked him up, while all the other dogs were let out of their cages on leashes with volunteers, this little guy, now named "Ares" was in a cage sitting next to a fence. They said it was because he was too "out of control and wild". After talking to the head of the rescue group, she said Ares had to be secluded because he bit a high school student volunteer who riped his dew claw out when he was removing the dog from the cage.

Ever since I picked Ares up, he’s been really loyal and friendly to my family and my boyfriend’s family, but he hates the rest of the world. I don’t understand it. If we have company over at our house, he growls and gets super excited like he wants to say "hi" and greet the person entering the house but when they get close, he attacks. It’s worse when people come to the front door (but both of my dogs kind of realize that friends use the garage). Ares growls at people when we’re out on walks, and sometimes if another dog starts to approach me, he’ll get all defensive and start pulling on the leash and jumping. I use a Halti when walking him, which makes an improvement, but everytime I go down to our town park there are always people who leave their dogs off a leash (even though it says "ILLEGAL DOGS MUST BE LEASHED AT ALL TIMES") and we usually get attacked by other bigger dogs. I mean I understand that Ares is trying to protect me, but is their any behavior training I can work with him on?

Another problem is that he gets so wound up and excited that he’s almost ridiculous to calm down. Even if secluded, he’ll just destroy whatever room he’s in, chewing up everything, running wild. I’ve talked to my groomer (who is also a breedre of Kerry Blue Terriers) and she said it’s ok to put Ares on tranquilizers or low dose ADHD drugs, cause her terriers are on them, but my vet says he won’t perscribe them. Actually Ares bit my vet because he got too close to me. I know he’s still a puppy, but he’s been labeled as "too agressive" to enter a group basic training class and I don’t know of anywhere that is relatively inexpensive to work with a "problem" dog.

I’m kind of at my wits end here since some of my family members (outside of the people who live with me and Ares on a daily basis) as well as neighbors say that Ares can’t be helped and we should just put him down or give him back (although the rescue group I got him from is no longer in existance) He’s not a bad dog, he’s just been in a kennel/rescue group for so long he hasn’t been properly socialized. I’m not ready to give up on him, but I need a training solution for when I have company over; he can’t be trusted outside of a cage.

Any suggestions for what I can do. I live in Buffalo, NY. I’m willing to do whatever it takes and money really isn’t an issue, but If you know of someone in my area who works with problem dogs that would be great. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the comment "It is the behavior of a possessive/aggressive, territorial, poorly socialized dog. Period. End of story.". I think I already said that when I rescued him we knew he was poorly socialized, being in a kennel for 6-7 months with minimal volutneers, I think I did the dog a favor.
Thanks for the advice. The dog is definitely getting enough exercise, we have a pool and a treadmill (although the treadmill thing doesn’t quite work, he’s afraid of it). I’ll post on the other site and see what help I can get there :)

IMO, you are dealing with a fearful dog, whose fear is being expressed through aggression.

I really think you need a professional to help you with this (unfortunately I am not in your area, so I do not know of anyone), but there are two things I would do differently, right off the bat.

First, I would only walk him in areas where you can be reasonably sure that you will not encounter loose dogs. Being attacked by other dogs is not going to help his attitude.

Second, if you have some way to wear him out, physically, then that might help.
Treadmill, swimming pool, bike (where there will be no loose dogs)….something like that. JRTs are known for being very high energy dogs, and that is complicating the situation.

At this point, I would continue to crate him elsewhere when people come to visit.

Here is the address of a forum for problem dogs. Why dont you post there, and see if anyone can recommend a trainer in your area?

EDIT:
Treadmill training is not hard……I have taught several dogs. My treadmill is against the wall on one side, so I can stand on the other side. I put a leash on the dog, and start out at 1/2 mph.

If necessary, I hold the dog on it until he figures out that he can walk (some try to lie down). If the dog jumps off, I just calmly put him back on without stopping. Once he is comfortable walking, I slowly increase the speed.

Sometimes I use cheese to make it more attractive .:o)

Once the dog learns to walk steadily, I start the treadmill first, and then ask him to walk up onto it from the end while it is moving. For some reason that seems to be easier than starting from a dead stop.

I usually start slow, ramp up, and then cool down again. With the hyper dogs I have had, I found that two 20 minute sessions a day seemed to work better than one longer session.

Be sure not to leave the dog on the treadmill unattended.

HELP WITH MY WESTIE SEARCHES?

Sunday, November 1st, 2009

Hey! I really want a westie puppy 8-12 months. Male. A playfull healthy puppy cause i really care about every animal. I really don’t want to deal with agression issues so avoid that if possible. My mom has been looking for a westie to but we both can’t find one. It would be a bonus if it was trained and i was hoping to find it 300$ or under. and it would be really cute hopefully! If possible i want him to be from a rescue center so i can save him. thanks! EASY TEN POINTS!

You might want to consider adopting a dog from a shelter house. Check this out.

Which Rescue Dog Would Be Right for Me?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

So I’m rescueing a dog from a shelter. I’ve narrowed it down to three dogs. There all really cute and I’m not sure which one would be best for me!!
1. Gary. Three year old purebred westie. Didn’t have much of a description about hime but he looks adorable!!
2. Detour. Two years old. He’s a complete mutt! I have no idea what he is. He’s a sort of ruby color and smaller and looks like maybe some sort of spaniel chihuahua mix. (maybe a cavalier king charles?)
3. Meata. One year old dashchund mix. She’s a really cute red floppy eared girl!
My family would prefer something smaller, that doesnt shed too much. We are pretty active. I will be walking the dog everyday. AT LEAST once a day. The dog will be left alone for six hours a day during the school year, but I have all summer to train it. Please helpp!! which dog would you get and which one do you think I should get??
Yes i know that i need to go and meet the dogs, but they’re in a foster home so i have to schedule to meet them and it’s going to be hard to schedule to meet three of them. So i want to see which one i think would be the best, meet it, and if i dont ‘connect’ with it, i will schedule to meet another one. Thankks:D

i wouldnt recommend the chihuahua. they can be pretty temperamental sometimes. dont be fooled by the dogs sizes, the smaller ones are usually higher maintenance. if you must pick from these 3, i would say the dachshund. but do a little research on the breeds and make sure you are compatible and ready for the responsibility. i mean i dont know…maybe the chihuahua IS perfect for you!

Help With Dog and Baby on the Way-PLEASE!?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

We’ve got a Westie, who’s 5ish and I’m 9 wks pregnant. Since we found out I’m pregnant he’s been going upstairs and weeing on our bed! Im convinced he is acting out because of this, though my husband disagrees! We had him done within days- he never was before as he was a rescue dog 2 yrs agao and as there was no reason to get him done it seemed unfair to put him through it ‘just because’. This has not prevented his marking upstairs- previously he never went upstairs at all- we had a cat and so had a baby gate for the first few months we got the dog and he just never was interested in going upstairs so we’re putting the baby gate up again, but I would rather be in control of his behaviour than his environment… he’s also a genreally anxious dog and we’ve started a crack down on discipline to reassert his position in the family, but what else can we do to prepare him- I’m worried it’s going to be a choice between the baby and the dog and I don’t want him to have to move again if at all possible.
Thanks for reading and looking forward to hearing any advice you can offer.
Thank you!

speak to your vet he/she should beable to give you some advise

Cornwall/devon Area Seeking Help?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Are there any fellow dog lovers who can help me out please? My mum, who has had dogs for half her life has recently lost two dogs within four months, a 10 year cairn who died suddenly and a 14.5 year yorkie who had to be put to sleep after a year or so of bad health of many things. She is looking to give a 1-4 year old female westie, cairn, cocker spaniel, sheltie type breed to give a good home to. I have looked at the local ads, rescue web sites, she has phoned rescue sites. She is in the process of filling applications for westie rescue at the moment, but does anyone know a dog who would fit the bill please?

there are two rescues that come to mind, both with fosterers all over the country, and people who for the right home are willing to drop them to the nearest fosterer to you. they ar
many tears rescue based in Wales
and
the yorkshire terrier and small breed rescue
both are online, though many tears also have premises.
