Whats Right Weight for Westie Puppies Who Are 3 Months Old?

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

My male 12 week old westie is 2.9 lbs. My female is smaller at 2.3 pounds. they are litter mates and have gain about .5 pounds since "i got them. I feed them grain-free puppy kibble 3 times a day about 1/4 cup each per feeding. Am i feeding enough and how is their weight? Vet has made no comments.

Ask the breeder. He/she is your best resource for any questions you have.

Three-fourths of a cup per day sounds like a LOT to me for such tiny pups. I fed my Setter pup about that much when he was that age, but he was nearly 20 lbs. by then.

My 12 Week Old Westie Puppy Is Normally Full of Life but He Has Become Sleepyand Lethargic?

Monday, December 6th, 2010

I took him to see our vet yesterday and he said he thought it was a bug he’d caught. His temp and chest were normal 24 hours later he is still the same he is eating and drinking as normal…How long can I expect him to be like this.

The vet would be the person to answer this question more accurately for you….

Is It Normal for Westie Puppies to Have Dry Paws?

Monday, September 27th, 2010

I haven’t seen my puppy in months so this is just a random question that popped into my head. So like my puppy’s paws are really dry (the paw pads). They feel like 150 grit sand paper. Are they supposed to be like that? Should I put lotion on his paws?

Once they start playing outside or walking on concrete the pads toughen up and become harsh feeling. All of my dogs have developed rough pads after they started to mature a little bit and were no longer nursing on their mother. Unless the pads are sore and splitting or bleeding there is nothing you can safely do to soften the pads up. Lotion can have toxins in it and dogs will lick their pads and feet. It is normal for them to do this. But always check your dogs feet when he comes back into the house from outside as you never know when he/she may pick up burrs, splinters or other foreign objects in their pads or between their pads. Hot concrete can burn their pads as can hot asphalt.

Westie Puppies – Which Is Best?

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

We are serious considering getting either a puppy or a couple of puppies but before we decide we need to know if this breed is better kept as a single dog or if they are happier with a friend/companion. If they’re better as a couple then are 2 females or 2 males better.

It is better to get one puppy at a time. That way the pup will bond with you better. If you get two they play and interact with each other more than you. You can get a second when your first is a bit older.

My New Westie Puppy Is Coming in 3 Days Have I Got Everything She Needs?

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

So far i have…
Metal Feeding bowl
Lead and collar
Bed and some blankets and teddies to help soothe her the first few nights
Crate
Toys
Training Kit
Brush
Puppy food
and i have booked her in for her vaccinations

If i have missed anything out or you have any useful advice please tell me!

Thank-you x
Sorry i should of mentioned they arent proper teddies they are like wee toys that u heat up in the microwave and give 2 the puppy for soothing:) I have got her 2 of them and a soothing blanket x sincee she is only 8 weeks thanks for the answers

It’s looking good so far. That’s really all a dog needs, except some additional treats and playthings in case of boredom. I got my Yorkie back in January ’07, and it was one of the best decisions of my life. She’s so playful, cute, and energetic, and she always keeps us happy when we’re down.

Your puppy will be extremely nervous on the first night. My dog refused to come out of her cage. Don’t touch her too much on the first night. Instead, be as reassuring and nice as you can. Smile and coo at her, without touching her, until she’s coaxed to come closer to you. When you feel that she has some trust in you, pet her softly. Make sure there isn’t a huge crowd over your new dog when she first arrives. The last thing she needs is to be ogled by the whole family. My parents made sure there were two people, at most, going in to see her.

Try playing with her throughout the various rooms in your house so she can get acquainted with her new surroundings and know where to go.

Good luck with your new puppy. Hope you guys will have a fabulous life together!

My Westie Puppy Has a Red Spot on Her Belly?

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

My westie puppy, shes nearly 9 months old, has a red spot on her belly. I have just noticed this morning when she was sleeping, She keeps inching there and licking around that place too. Do I need to take her to a vet or is there some treatment i can get from the pet shop? Thanks, I really hope my dog will be okay so any advice is awesome.

Thanks.

As Cookie has said, it could be a food allergy. (Although the food allergy will come from vaccine side-effects. Westies are very prone to side-effects from vaccines.) Buy yourself some Calendula tincture or Calendula cream. Calendula tincture is cheaper and more effective. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and will treat strepp and/or staph infections. If you can get the tincture, put two teaspoons (10 mls) of the tincture into a cup, and add 90 mls of "just off the boil" water. Leave to cool, and when cool, bathe the area with clean cotton wool. Keep the actual tincture in a cool, dark place…..like under the sink. It lasts for years, so works out very cheap. If you have any questions on it, you can join the list below, and we’ll help all we can.

Is This Unhealthy in a Litter of Westie Puppies?

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Well we are looking for a puppy, we have one spotted but there is only one question, the breed of dog is West Highland White Terrier so only a small breed of dog, and the mum only had 2 pups, is this normal, unhealthy? I am have come accross a few other litters with only 2 pups, but is this normal? There is a female and a male pup. Thanks!
Thanks for your answers so far, but I really dont think showing a dog makes it any healthier? Just a theory!?
Also, the woman is applying for KC Registration at the moment, and that is in waiting (Takes up to 3 weeks).. If it gets accepted, will this be more of a guarentee that the pup is healthy?

You need to concern yourself more with official health test certificates than litter size if you are looking for healthy puppies – especially with westies… they have so many allergies and illnesses at the moment it isn’t funny.

To answer you question, it is not unhealthy for a b1tch to only have 2 puppies.

The size of the breed is irrelevant, it is just dependant on the individual dam.

I have known a b1tch of my aunts to have 2 pups one litter, then 11 the next time she bred her and then 1 in the litter after that – all the puppies were fantastic examples of the breed.

It would actually imply the puppies will be healthier as they have had better access to milk and more one on one interaction from mum.

The only concern i would personally have is if you wanted to get the b1tch to breed westies yourself because it is a good indication of the litter size you could expect from your own b1tch.

Breeding should never be about the money, but it is always better to breed more than less when it comes to covering your expenses.

When Do Puppies Get There First and Second Vaccinations?

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Earlier i asked a question which was ‘When can westie puppies start to go for walks outside?’ and I got a good answer which was ’3-4 weeks after there second vaccination’ and now im wondering when they get there second vaccination ! (how many weeks old ) lol x

In My area it is
first shots- 6-8
Second shots-10-12
Third shots-14-16

The best way to find out about the vaccinations in your area is to call your local vet, some vets use different vaccines, and vaccinate against different things, so to be safe I would call them.

Why Does My Westie Puppy Growl at Me When We Pick Him Up?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

He has just had his 2nd jab today and we think hes abit tender round his chest area even though he was done in the neck. He has never done this before and we are wondering why?
He has only done it since hes had his injection and he had a kennel cough thing up his nose and he didnt like it.

might have hurt him.
