How to Groom a Westie?
Monday, January 25th, 2010My Dog Has Blood Red Second Eyelids?
Tuesday, January 19th, 2010It’s definatley not cherry eye. It’s like her seconds eyelids when you lift up her eyelids and when she looks to the side. She is a wheaten terrier/westie cross and she went to the groomers for the first time and when she came back her left eye was like this, her actual eyeball isn’t bloodshot at all. anyway, the next day her other eye was the same. She got groomed on thursday. Do you think it is the stress of it? I just want an opinion before I go rushing to the vets if it’s nothing, because it’s nearly an hour away! thanks =]
Definitely see a vet. If the groomers got shampoo or whatnot in her eyes she may be having a reaction to whatever they used. Think of it this way — if your eyelids became red and inflamed would you wait to go to the doctor? Unlikely! I’d be freaking out!
Need Some Help With Dog Grooming, Please?
Thursday, December 17th, 2009I have a Westie who is in serious need of some grooming. He needs a bath, his nails trimmed and at 7 months-his first hair cut. I’ve given him a bath and taken him to trim his nails before but I’ve never taken him to get a cut or to the groomers. I want him to look good for Christmas so I will take him to a groomer to do everything. He has a small problem though…he tends to nip and want to bite if someone is touching him in a way he doesn’t like, and I’m positive he will be scared of scissors since he’s never had a cut before. I don’t want to cause problems with the groomers so how can I handle this? Should the groomers be experienced with different reactions from dogs? Will they provide him with a muzzle if he needs it or do I need to bring one? I don’t want a law suit along with the groomers bill! Any suggestions on how to make his first grooming experience a good one would be appreciated ![]()
Groomers deal with snappy dogs all the time, trust me.
Tell them before hand that he will need a muzzle/that he tends to bite/nip and mention it’s his first time.
They will supply the muzzle.
Just take him in, drop him off, pick him up. Don’t fuss over him, it will probably add to his anxiety.
Good luck (:
A freshly groomed dog is amazing, haha.
I love when my pup comes home from the groomer.
Tips on Keeping a Westie Well-Groomed?
Sunday, November 8th, 2009I am getting a West Highland White Terrier today. I have been reading about the breed for awhile, and I know that she will have to be hand stripped 3-4 times a year. Other than that, how do I keep her groomed. Can she be clipped or trimmed?
I am going to pay someone else to hand strip her.
Talk with your breeder. This is a beautiful dog, but very difficult to keep snowy-white. If your dog is show-quality and there is even a remote chance that this dog will see a show ring, it is imperative that she is hand stripped. Clippering the coat will ruin it. If you are getting a puppy, you will want to do a little stripping every day or so. Keep sessions short and happy. You are just getting the dog accustomed to the stripping. I believe the head is typically scissored to get the prized "chrysanthemum" look. Never allow a pair of clippers to touch a show-coat.
Pet-quality is your choice. I have a pet Scottie–she is clippered. Clippering breaks the coat and softens it.
Ask the breeder what products are recommended to keep the coat white. Ask how to address staining in the coat (eyes, feet, muzzle). Also, I’m sure you understand that Westies are notorious for skin problems. Find out what food, supplements and flea preventatives your breeder recommends. Using the correct products will help keep the coat in tip-top shape. Also, ask for recommendations on what shampoos to use to bathe (you can get whitening shampoos) and how often to bathe. The tendency is to want to bathe white-coated dogs very frequently, but this can be very detrimental to the coat and skin. Good brushing and wiping paws is preferred to bathing for wirey terrier coats. Westies love to dig in the dirt, so that doesn’t mesh well with the snowy coat.
Good luck with your new pooch. These are special little dogs!
What Kind of Dog Is This? Link to Picture Inside!?
Saturday, October 17th, 2009We got this dog at the shelter this weekend. They told us she was a Westie, but after researching the traits of a Westie, I know she can’t be full blooded. She has a long, thin tail, and only one coat, not two.
She needed groomed really badly, but when I brought her home and brushed her out, she still looked wispy as ever. Please ignore my boyfriend in the picture, he was being a total ham.

Thank you all for your quick responses! You’re right – she’s probably just poorly bred. She was a rescue dog, and I wasn’t planning on showing her or anything. Just loving her and having her as a companion!
Thank you all – she’s a sweet, happy dog that is adjusting quite nicely to our home.
i used to have a westie and when he was a puppy he only had one coat but he grew it out later on. she looks just like my westie. if it is a westie, you will love her because if you are sad they will try to make you feel better.

Getting a Westie Groomed?
Sunday, October 4th, 2009I just got a westie puppy, when i take him to the groomers what do I get? Does anyone know of a good groomer in west texas?
Ask local westie breed club or your vet for referrals – both know who in the area does good grooming. You simply tell the groomer you want your puppy groomed in westie standard clip or however you like. Just be sure to be -specific- absolutely specific about what length you want.
Where Can I Find a Local Store in Maryland That Sells Puppies?
Friday, August 28th, 2009my family is thinking about buying 2 puppies. though theres 3 to choose from. a westie, maltese, and a bichon frise. (i dont like the grooming they do on the maltese and bichon. they don’t trim the puppies hair. not once. also i asked a question before saying where to get a newborn (it was a mistake and u dont need to be telling me anymore!). anyways, if you could help me i would really aprreciate it!!
READ ALL OF THIS!!! PLEASE!!!
OK I read all of your question and I think that if you want 2 puppies you have a great opportunity to save 2 lives. Puppies from pet stores are from PUPPY MILLS!!! NOOOO EXCEPTIONS!!! Sorry to burst that one out but I really want to get the point across that if you buy a puppy from a store, it is from a mill! Got it? It’s from a mill. A mill. Google puppy mills please.

Should I Get a Jack Russell or Westie?
Wednesday, August 12th, 200945-60 minutes of exercise
low-no shedding
small
low-med.grooming
gone for school 8 hours
nevermind low gromming and low shedding
Your choice, here is some information for you to help
Jack Russells shed all year around and require constant brushing. These active little dogs make excellent companions and guard dogs and require a family that will spend plenty of time playing with them and taking them for walks. They are very people-orientated and are more suited to older children, but can happily live with young children so long as they are always supervised together to prevent them from hurting one another. Obedience training and socialization are important for a happy, healthy Jack Russell. Despite their small size, these dogs are not recommended for the condominium or apartment dweller unless the owner is ready to take on the daunting task of providing the dog with the necessary amount of exercise and stimulation.
The Westie is not a big shedder, but does require regular hair cuts, a busy little fellow, always ready for fun, he is happy, curious, affection and demanding and one of the friendliest terriers you will ever meet. They just relish in daily romps in a safe area (otherwise must be walked on lead), as well as lots of playtime at home. They adore the company of their human companions, but also have a strong independent streak and it would be advisable to firmly train them from when they are a puppy. They make fantastic pets for families and school-age children who want a cute looking dog with loads of attitude.
Good luck choosing………….
How Often Do You Have to Groom Your Dog Professionally at a "Barber Shop"?
Thursday, August 6th, 2009My sisters and I are trying to persuade our parents to let us get a dog. So we have to search up LOTS of information. It’s between toy poodle, westie, shih tzu, or havanese. Can you explain the grooming details for each dog? Thanks so much! Other info is also appreciated.
Firstly they are called grooming salons or something of that nature-not barber shops.
Most of those dogs require lots of grooming work.
Toy poodles-Very rigorous grooming. Since the dog doesn’t have fur, but has hair the dog must be well kept. Bathing, brushing, clipping will all be done regularly. Brushing will be done daily, bathing and clipping at least every 4 to 6 weeks. Each time you visit a groomer with this breed of dog you’re looking to spend 60-100 bucks per visit.
Westie-Not as much grooming. Most attention should be paid attention to the face, you should clean it every day since food can get stuck in the front whiskers of the fur coat. Normally these dogs get something similar to a puppy cut. Short and scruffy. I’m not sure for prices, it’ll be less than a poodle though.
Shih Tzu-Once again, like the toy poodle-lots of grooming. Brush daily, bath and groom every 4 to 7 weeks. If you’re going for the long coat you might brush them twice a day. If you get the Shih Tzu puppy cut it will be A LOT less grooming involved. It’ll cost around 30-60 bucks depending where you go, how much fur is on the dog already, etc.
Havanese-The coat can be clipped short for easier care. But if you keep the coat long, it’ll need to be thoroughly brush and combed at least twice a week. Show dog cuts need a great deal more grooming. There is little to no shedding, so dead hair must be removed by brushing. Check the eyes and ears regularly. Prices can range.
Other info-you can always look online or watch shows. Books from libraries-as cheesy as that sounds-provide a great deal of info. Good luck!
