Can West Highland Terriers Run 2 or 3 Miles? or Will That Over Work Them?

Monday, February 1st, 2010

i want to get a Westie or a Cocker spaniel, i don’t know what to get? i like to go running a lot can Westie’s run 2 or 3 miles in 30 minutes, or will that over work them?

those two breeds, especially the westie, are not good running partners

if i was you and wanted a running companion i would look into a thin dog with long legs, like a greyhound body type, do some research on dog breeds who like to run

before you go out and buy a dog, please visit your local animal shelter, they have plenty of wonderful dogs who need a good home, and are generally cheaper than a breeder or pet shop, that’s were i found my westie and border collie

Can Someone Tell Me About West Highland White Terriers?

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

i wanted to start raising my first dog, and i found out about the West Highland White Terrier, so can someone gimme some help or tips?

Allergies……….. I have a westie. Wouldn’t trade him for the world. But when I got my next dog didn’t get a westie. Mine has allergies and they are well known for having them. They have a mind of their own. Some love to dig. If you get one, make sure you train it. They are not the easiest dog to train. They think on their own, unlike some that will check to make sure that you are happy. My westie could care less. They will test you. but then all dogs do that. Really the main thing is that the allergies. And they are NOT a fluffy white dog. They don’t want to stay clean. Are you kidding there are so many other things to do.

Good luck.

My West Highland Terriers Mouth Is Open. 4year Old Dog?

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

He has only recently started this behaviour, he appears to be in good health otherwise.

You don’t give much information. Could be panting, or maybe it’s just how he is. My dog’s tongue used to loll out all the time, just something he did.

Are West Highland Terriers Good Dogs?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

I know it depends on their actual personalities but I just wanted to know generally what west highland terriers are like.

West Highland White Terriers are game and hardy little terriers, which are easy to train. They are fairly friendly toward strangers and get along well with children. They are lively and extremely self-assured toward other dogs, but will not pick fights with other dogs, if their owners know how to display proper leadership. They may chase a cat for fun, and need to be corrected if they do attempt this.
Robust, friendly, cocky and spunky. Westies just love companionship. Despite its size, they make a very good watchdog. These little dogs are easy to travel with. The Westie likes to dig and bark.

Yorkshire Terriers in 28034? and How Much Do West Highland Terriers Cost?

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Can someone tell me a site for an animal shelter for Dallas North Carolina? I would like to find a dog since we are getting rid of our two cats. Help? I would really like to get a Yorkshire Terrier. A white or a one. Also…how much do West Highland Terriers cost? I know they are expensive, but I still would like to get one.

there are no white yorkies or purebred white yorkies. The westies usually run about $800-$1200 for a [et quality, higher for a show quality. go to www.petfinder.com and type in your zip code in the box on the left side and the dog types you are looking for and it will show you any available in your area in shelters and recues. Good lick! Hope you get one.

Should You Been Giving West Highland Terriers Beef?

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

I heard somewhere you shouldn’t give them beef as its bad for their skin…is this true?
**i don’t mean pure beef but in their dinner ….
even though the caesar tins have beef – which is odd
i think maybe mine is algeric to it then cause his vet said we shouldn’t give him beef when he was a pup
iv never give him beef because he told me this

It’s true with my westie. (I just signed up to yahoo to answer your question as beef has a terrible affect on my dogs).

I have a westie and a westie X Poodle.

The cross has a small reaction, the pure bred has a HUGE reation.

If I give him just a little he gets very very itchy. it’s so bad, i don’t eat beef at home because i like giving left overs to my dogs.

I’m sure not all Westies have this problem, but I have heard of it happening to other westies, so give him beef if you want, but just watch for a reaction, alternatively, it’s probably best not too.

Good luck, beautiful dogs.

What Sound Frequency Really Annoys West Highland Terriers?

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

And if there is a particular frequency, would you recommend sine, square or sawtooth waveforms?
And I only want it so I can wind up some neighbors’ dog up the road by the way, and please don’t give me any morality bullshit :P

I assume your dog will not give up information on an imminent terrorist attack?

What Dog Is Better for Kids, a West-Highland White Terrier or a Yorkshire Terriers?

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I really like both terriers so I want to know which one is better for my kids? I have a 13 year old, a 11 year old, and a 16 year old.

Well, that depends on you and your family.

Yorkies are very fragile, so you must have a relatively peaceful household. (At their ages, your kids should be old enough to be gentle with a toy breed dog, right?) Yorkies are energetic and can be considered hyper or frantic by some, although they don't really need outdoors exercise. They're very alert and loyal and make very good watch dogs, although most people aren't intimidated by yapping. Yorkies tend to be quite bossy, so you must not make the mistake of babying them or they will learn to manipulate you! If you're going to purchase a puppy, you must purchase from a high quality breeder. Due to their popularity, backyard breeders are mass-producing Yorkies that are overflowing with health and behavioral issues (like neurosis, separation anxiety, timidity). Yorkies make great little lap dogs, they love being with their family.

Westies are very sturdy for their size. Your kids can actually take the Westie outside to play like a "normal" dog. However, it isn't unusual for overexcited Westies to be nippy, so the kids shouldn't go crazy, you know? They're very intelligent, but their independent nature can also mean that training can be pretty difficult. They also require regular stimulation to keep them from being destructive out of boredom. And due to their independence, they aren't usually lap dogs; they can be, but don't be surprised if your Westie prefers the floor on the other side of the room. Westies are energetic and were designed to dig, so expect a lot of holes in your yard. Westies also unusually have high prey drives, which may result in some dead squirrels in your yard.. Anyway, Westies are much, much truer to the "terrier" character than the Yorkie. They're independent, prey-driven, digging, smart, energetic..
