Why Does My Dog Rip Out My Puppy’s Fur? Serious Answers Only?

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

i have a rescue dog who’s almost 2 and is a mix breed and a 6 month old west highland terrier puppy. the oldest dog has always hand strange tendencies (licking people, sniffing the puppy’s private areas constantly) and now he’s started to casually rip out the puppy’s fur. it’s not vicious as far as i can tell but i’d still like to know why he’s doing it.

Vicious or not, protect the baby/puppy

West Highland Terrier Under Weight?

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

so.. I’ve got a 2 1/2 year old male west highland terrier. We got him from a rescue centre last February and he wasn’t being fed regularly before. We have him shaved and left with a fluffy face (in case that will effect what his weight looks like). He gets fed a bowl full of dry biscuits every night. He seems a lot skinnier than the other west highland terrier’s i have seen (he doesn’t look like a foot stool LOL)
Should he still be this skinny at his age? Will he get bigger as he gets older? What should i do to help him put on weight?
Thanks in advance :)

You need to talk to your veterinarian about this. Every dog is different. He just may be smaller than average, or look skinnier because he’s shaved. Are bones sticking out badly?

If your dog actually is underweight, you can feed puppy food. Puppy food has a higher calorie content and can help dogs put on weight.

What Is Wrong With My Dog?

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

My dog is 14 years old, West Highland Terrier mix rescued from a puppy mill at age three. She has been coughing for a while and the vet said it was because our house was too dry. We added a humidifier and her cough didn’t improve. A year later it has gotten worse, she is pacing, coughing, panting, and unable to sleep for more than half an hour at a time. Sometimes her cough is so bad she has to lay down while doing it. We have asked the vet to put her down, her quality of life isn’t good but the vet keeps saying no and she insists it’s the dry air. After a hear of a humidifier in almost every room I highly doubt that the place isn’t humid enough for her. I know she’s old and it could just be age, but the vet isn’t helping us, the next closest vets is about two hours away and we don’t have the money to get there. What could be making my dog cough?

Serious answers only, nothing stupid please. I’m looking for serious answers of a deeply loved family pet. You post something not helpful, I will report you. Simple as that. Thank you.
Thank you all for answering. we’ve had her since she was three and she’s been up to date on all her shots. The coughing started when she hit eleven. She got blood work done, that was about it. Again, out vet isn’t good. I’ve written many times complaining about her to no avail. I never thought about taking her to a shelter to see what they could do, even if they would have a vet we could see. At 14, having lived a good life (aside from the puppy mill) I’m afraid the only option should it be heart worms or heart failure… I’m thinking it’d be best for her to be put down. I don’t like seeing her pace and not sleep, it breaks my heart. Being almost fully blind, deaf, unable to control her bowl movements… I think it’d be for the best. having posted this and your results it almost confirms my worst fears, but thank you so much for having compassion and posting here. I really do appreciate it, very much. Bless you all.

Test her for heartworms, honestly your current vet sounds like a quack who just wants your money but if that’s the only vet within reasonable distance you don’t have many options. Also have the vet check for an upper respiratory infection (he should listen to her lungs and heart with a stethoscope). Also it is very unusual for the vet to refuse to euthanize a dog, sounds like another scheme to make you keep coming back so he can make more money off of you. Regardless of what the vet says tell him to check her lungs and do a heartworm test just so your vet can’t bs you tell him to do the heartworm test in the same room you are in, it takes about 10 minutes to give a result and 2 blue dots mean heartworm possitive.

At her age unfortunately treatment would probably kill her as her symptoms sound like the advanced stages of heartworms in my opinion and the fast treatment will take cost you over $300. If she isn’t on heartworm prevention put her on it if she has heartworms, if its so advanced she will have them the rest of her life but it may give her a better quality of life and a few more years.

Which Breeds of Dogs Do You Want in the Future?

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Right now I have 2 dogs… but when I move out in like 5 years my parents wont let me take them (I assume) so my list of dogs that I want are:

1. Great Dane
2. Chihuahua
3. West Highland Terrier or Cairn Terrier
and
4. French Bulldog or Boston terrier

Mostly a great dane… they are such amazing dogs… also Ive done alot of reasearch and they are really the perfect dog for me :P
I plan on moving into the city so He would be intimidating (looking) but still super friendly (well most Ive come in contact with are like this… they look like massive guard dogs… but they were soo friendly :P )

So its kind of a perfect fit…also I like going on long walks… and the area I want to live in, in the City has a park right beside it… (like a trail) so I could take him through there, then go back up this long street :P … LOL I have this planned out.perfectly… he is a big dog but they say if you excersize them enough, and play with them enough that they dont need a big property…and that they are couch potatoes when at home… so theyre kind of like me… energetic when Im outside… but lazy when Im indoors :P … BUT I would get him while I still lived at home (working part time) .. that way I can train him full on for a good year, so when I move out he is trained and socialized properly,

Lol :p so which dogs would you get in the future? and why?

Lol Right now I have a chinese crested I rescued off the streets. and a Golden-mix :P
I love them both… and they are perfect :P but I think it would be nice to change it up :P

Right Now I Have Kimo! :) P

My Cute Chihuahua, I LOVE HIM SO MUCH! <3333333

In The Near Future I Would Want A Yorkshire Terrier! :) P

Should I Convince My Friend to Take His Dog to the Shelter?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

She’s a White West Highland Terrier. She’s around 5 years old. His dad used to breed dogs (as a BYB) and wanted to use her, but she killed her pups. I tried to take care of her during the summer (bathing her, walking her everyday, etc) but I couldn’t manage it. It’s junior year, I have a lot of classes, and I also have my own dog to take care of. She also isn’t neutered.
She’s a very, very sweet girl, absolutely loving towards my friend’s family, but they don’t realize it. She looked like a mop. I had to cut off chunks of her fur and then I took her to the groomers. She’s lively and knows how to play fetch and absolutely loves being pet. It breaks my heart because they keep her in a cage all day and the only interaction with her is feeding her and giving her water. She might have diabetes (or UTI, either one causes peeing problems). They won’t take her to the vet, won’t walk her, and they won’t even pet her.
They even let her out of the gate and see is she’d run away, but she’d come back each time. I really want her to go to a new home, she’s so loving. When I took care of her during the summer, his dad said she’s "mine now". So should I ask to see if they want to take her to the shelter or a rescue group?
Sorry it’s so lengthy.
I can’t take her in. My yard is not safe for her and no one’s at home to crate train her. My mom doesn’t want her in her house.
Oh I just notied. I meant she’s not *spayed.

Can you take her on yourself? Would your parents let you have her? If not, then yes, I think you should tell them to give her to a shelter. This poor little dog is not being treated correctly and she needs to see a vet. I would even go as far as to say you should report them if they refuse to take her to a shelter. You are really the only hope she has of finding the caring, loving home she deserves, so please don’t let her down.

Apartment Dog? Please Help!?

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Hi everyone my name is Lily and I am moving to Dallas into a apartment in just a few weeks. I want to get a dog or maybe even two:) and yes my apartment accepts dogs. It has no weight restrictions. I have had dogs all my life at home with my family (this is going to be my first time moving out since im 19) so I am well aware of what responsibilities a dog is plus I am a HUGE animal lover. The dogs I have right now is a pittweiler (pittbull rottweiler mix) female and a chowchow wolf mix ( the vet actually thinks she is part coyote) and I used to have a huge pure breed rottweiler but he passed away at the age of 13. They have only ever been inside dogs so I am used to taking dogs out for walks and playing with them and cleaning up after them and I love it. So what I need your help with is picking which dog breed is best for my new lifestyle. I will be living in a apartment and they will be 24/7 inside dogs. I do need a dog that wont bark too much. I want a affectionate dog that will love to cuddle and sleep on my bed with me and follow me but also like to play and walk. I wont leave the dog home alone for too long and if I would need to I would let it go to Doggie day care. If possible I will probably take him/her with me everywhere anytime its possible. I dont work too many hours and I make good money so I can handle vet bills. If you have any suggestions for what kind of breed I should get please answer!
some breeds i have been thinking about:
PUG!
Bichon Frise
Yorkie
Greyhound
Schipperke
Great Dane
English Toy Spaniel
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Newfound land
West highland white terrier
anyone have experiences with these breeds? which is most affectionate and loving? best apartment dog?
please suggest any others or your favorite:)

note: I LOVE big dogs like pittbulls, boxers and rottweilers but since I am in a apartment I dont think its fair to put these energetic dogs in a small space but as soon as I get a house ill get them :P

ALSO ANY DOG I WILL BE GETTING WILL BE ADOPTED FROM A RESCUE! I REFUSE TO BUY :)

Hi Lily,
I have had a West Highland Terrier (Westi) for almost 12 years now. She is the love of my life. Westies are very adaptable to their surroundings. I have lived in both houses and apartments and she has been fine with both. She is mainly an inside dog, but she loves basking in the sun. Hates rain and snow, but loves the sun. She’ll stay out for hours. Mine is only 14lbs, but they can get up to about 18lbs. She is not a big barker, only when someone comes to the door. She loves to cuddle, especially at bed time. Loves car rides, any kind of attention from anyone, and even baths. They’re great companions and incredibly smart. But every breed comes with certain health conditions. Westies are know to have very sensitive skin. They’ll need a cortisone shot about once a year. They are also known to have floating knee caps. It doesn’t hurt them, it’s just annoying. They can also develop a problem producing tears. This developed in mine about 1 1/2 years ago. She just needs a bit of ointment in her eye once a day. She’s almost 12, but still acts like a puppy. The cat certainly keeps her young. If you able to spend a good amount of time with it, this would be ideal for you. I would recommend two, or at least a cat to keep it company while your gone. Here’s a little fact about Westies you may not have known: They were first bred in Scotland to hunt small vermin. They have the strongest tail of all the breeds so that if they get stuck in a hole, you can pull them out by the tail and it won’t hurt them. Pretty cool huh? I may be just bias, but I say go with the Westie. They are pure awesomeness.

I too love big dogs! They’re just big goofballs who think they’re human with four legs.
So you’re looking for a playful, affectionate, docile and laid back furry companion?

am38: first of all pittbulls are not vicious neither are rottweilers its all how you raise them. 2 my dogs have NEVER been caged up ever. they wander around the house as they please and 3 if you can read it says Im going to be moving to a apartment it never said I live in one now. I dont right now I live in a house with a yard and those 2 dogs are staying with my family not coming with me as they are family pets not MINE! jesus christ some people…

I think the Spaniel breeds will be the most likely. My child hood pet was 3/4 Cocker and 1/4 Australian Shepard. Stanley was a real love and only barked at boys that were to "handy" He was only protecting me and I knew that my Dad had sent him out. He was always grinning when I came in. My Stepson had a sweet Springer Spaniel that never barked and his only problem was burying his ball in the flower bed to keep my 4lb female Chihuahua from stealing it. Mother Robert had a Shih tzu diva hat thought she was a dining table center piece. If any dining chair was out enough that she could use it to get on the table she would push aside what ever might be there to sit in the exact center to look out the windows. I cannot remember her barking either. She loved me I fed her and brushed her and put ribbons on her ears. She was only more proud when I brought her from the groomers. She would be depressed when she was not pretty, really.

Can I Get Another Dog if I Already Have a West Highland Terrier?

Friday, June 18th, 2010

My westie is almost 9 and he is starting to slow down a bit. For this reason my parents think its a good idea to get another younger dog to try and speed him up a bit. Also because we want another dog. Im not 100% sure because im worried about what it will do to our original dog. He is very territorial. We would probably get a female rescue dog either a young pub or else a few months old. Any opinions??

I would definitely do a pre-warm up between the two dogs, like bringing your Westie along when you meet one of the future pups. If they get along, you’ll know thats the right one :D

Is It Okay to Raise a Female West Highland Terrier With My Male Pit Bull?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

My 1 year old male pit bull started playing with a west highland terrier. I’ve been wanting a Westie for a while now but was afraid their personality would be too yappy and hard to get along with my pit bull. My pit bull is very good with ALL dogs so i have no concerns with him. I’ve done reading and research myself about Westies but would like to hear your input as well. My questions are:

-Do westies bark alot? If yes, can i easily correct it with training and discipline?
-Will the westie be nice to my pit bull?
-Since i have trained a pit bull, my friends tell me that training (pottying, crate, no chewing, etc) a Westie will not be difficult for me since pit bulls are more stubborn than Westies. Is this true?
-Any other concerns about Westies that i should know about?

I might rescue a Westie if everything seems to work out.

Your Pit Bull is not yet mature and may still become dog aggressive. Not saying it will happen but, don’t discount the possibility.A less than positive encounter with another dog can also flip that switch.

Some things to read and consider:

The dogs may get along fine. The fact that you will have two terriers means there is a fair chance they won’t.If they don’t get along, are you prepared to crate and rotate while making sure the dogs are separate at all times?
