WEST HIGHLAND TERRIER PUPPY TEARING UP the FRICKEN’ HOUSE?

Sunday, May 20th, 2012

i have a terrier puppy that i got last week thursday, and well, really, it’s ripping the house to shreds. i mean, we’ve actually even had Ceaser Millan to come and train him. it worked, but a few days later, he started doing it again. we’ve already had to replace two LEATHER chairs.and one book rack. and get rid of our Cabernet. and throw away my DS coz it was broken. HELP US PLEASE OR WE WILL EVENTUALLY LOSE THE WHOLE HOUSE.
and yes, i have just added this, Cesar Millan is my mum’s uncle, asked by one of the answerers.
i was saying that for BYBs, coz she asked during her question.

Cesar Millan came to your house for a puppy you got last thursday? Is he a family friend or something?

You’ve also just found out the problem with band-aids imstead of cures. The problem is that the dog isn’t being supervised properly or exercised properly. There is no magic cure for this.

Your Westie needs to be ALWAYS supervised and when he can’t be, he gets put in a cage for no longer than an hour or two. When he does something wrong, he gets corrected appropriately and life goes on.

If you guys aren’t willing to supervise the dog, then he goes back to the breeder or he goes to Westie rescue. http://www.westieclubamerica.com/rescue/

Edit: Interesting that 31 minutes ago you were "Getting a Westie this April", now here you are with a Westie that you’ve had since Thursday.

Lying isn’t becoming. Neither is trolling.

i’m getting a west highland terrier puppy this april or so, but do not know exaclty wpt 2 research. i’m pretty much done on food, where to put their bed, and that kind of stuff, but i’m kinda stuck on wot else i need to do. i’ve been puppy proofing the house aswell. wot else should i do?

The very best place to look up your breed of dog is the AKC ( American Kennel Club) The web site is,
www.akc.com
They have a tremendous web site with every type of breed imaginable. All you do is to look up your breed and they will give you more information about your breed than anywhere else possibly can. All they do is dogs.
It will give you answers about the dogs size and weight, lifespan, needs, allergies, legitimate breeders in your area. It will also tell you what your dog was bred for. They also tell you about any genetic diseases that your breed can expect in his older years.
I highly recommend that you visit that web site. You learn everything possible that there is to know about Westies.
I hope this helps

Tips for Grooming a West Highland Terrier Puppy?

Saturday, May 12th, 2012

im getting a new westie puppy today, and i KNOW they need good grooming daily.
I was just wondering if anyone who has this dog or has grooming experience has any tips they’d like to share?

THANKS :)
yes i do know the breed is a hand stripped dog, i just wanted extra tips. Most of these were very helpful thank you!

I used to work at a petshop and I groomed a few of the westie puppies we got in. The best thing to use to bathe them is a no tangle puppy shampoo that has aloe in it, or a shampoo that brings out the white in them. Once you get done, dry them off good and for a puppy use a small slicker brush to get the remaining knots out and then use a small baby brush to soften its coat.

Training a Puppy West Highland Terrier?!?

Friday, January 7th, 2011

My mum recently got a 6 week old West Highland Terrier as a gift since she had always wanted a dog. It was difficult to adjust to having a puppy at first since we had never lived with a dog before. He is now learning to got to the toilet in a specific place and was behaving very well up until last week.

He is now almost 9 weeks old and he bites everything and everyone. We expect that from a pup since he is going through a learning phase and is teething, and the vet advised that we are firm with him and we tell him ‘no’ and put him in his bed when he does this. Today, he made 3 attempts to bite me, and I followed the vet’s instructions. My mum told me off for doing this, but I am frightened his behaviour will get out of control and he will snap at a child when he is old enough to walk outside.

What should I do in this situation? I am not willing to let him bite me just because he is a pup. My mum tells me not to tell him off, yet she leaves me to look after him the majority of the time.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

It hasn’t help that you got him at 6 weeks old you go him from a bad breeder no responsible breeder would allow a puppy to leave before 8 weeks . It maybe only two weeks but they learn very important social skills from there mum and litter mates. And puppies which leave to early are more prone to have behaviour problems when older. Your whole family need to work together to make this puppy grows up to be a well behavioured dog. Biting and nipping is natural but when he does it you need to let out a sharp yelping noise and remove yourself from the puppy and ignore him till he has calmed down. It takes time and everyone needs to do it or all the puppy will do is get confused and that is total unfair on the puppy. Puppies need to learn from the start what is and isn’t allowed. You whole family need to sit down and talk about this so everybody works together for the sake of the puppy. Your mum needs to start training the puppy or it will end up out of hand and like so many puppies that have terrible owners in a rescue. I would also advice that you enrol him in a puppy class i know he isn’t old enough as his isn’t old enough to be fully vaccinated yet but they get booked up so a good idea to pre- book for when he is. They are great fun for both puppy and owner and are a very important part of get the puupy started on the right track.

7 Year Old West Highland White Terrier and New Puppy?

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

I have a very good tempered 7 year old male west highland white terrier and we are getting a 8 week old border terrier puppy in about 4 week’s do you think he will be okay with this and how do i make him not feel left out and make him enjoy having a puppy?

Have fun with them both, don’t like one over the other! Leave them alone for a while, so they get to know each other a little. Make sure you pay even attention to both of them.

How Should I Prepare for My New West Highland Terrier Puppy?

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

In three weeks there will be a new furry little member in my family. If you’ve owned a Westie, what are they like, what difficulties should I be prepared to face?
I’d love to also read any endearing stories of your Westie. You can’t imagine how excited I am for the 27th of March when I get to pick him up, I’ve been patiently waiting for a dog for 10 years due to having lived in a unit, seeing others with dogs almost brought tears to my eyes.

Hi,

It’s important to help your new pet acclimate to your home by being prepared and being patient. It may take anywhere from a few days to two months for you and your new dog to adjust to each other. Here are more tips:
