Once you find your
quality breeder, the next step is to think seriously about the West Highland Terrier
puppies. This breed’s puppies are great looking and by their looks, cry to be
spoilt and indulged. However, you will find out soon enough that this is not a
lapdog, though it very much looks like one.
A Lot of Personality in These
Tiny Terriers
You will find out soon enough that West Highland Terrier
puppies are very independent (bordering on domineering) in their behavior. They
will be very accommodative as long as they do what they like – and that is chasing
and running about the house. They have a very sunny disposition as long as you
do not fuss too much about them. They definitely hate to be carried around and/or
cuddled. They would love however, to follow you all over the house wherever you
go.
The West Highland White Terriers are also very curious by nature, love
to dig and investigate and often can ingest things that they are not supposed
to. They often catch insects and other things that may crawl around in their environment.
Since they are so small, they might get hurt while getting in between the legs
of the people around the house. Hence, it is always a good idea to have a secure
playpen in the house where they can play without the danger of getting hurt.
These
puppies need to be socialized from very early age or they would grow aggressive
and difficult to control. Though they are diminutive in size, they have a lot
of spunk and they cannot be bullied into good behavior. Consistent training will
be required for three to six months until this West Highland Terrier puppy get
the basics of what is expected of it.
West Highland Terrier puppies are
extremely intelligent and training them is not very hard as long as it is done
patiently and with positive reinforcement. They are happy with attention, care
and comfort but they hate to be carried. They are independent dogs whose behavior
is clearly that of a predator, owing to its ancestry of being a hunting dog.
When
you go to a breeder, ensure that you describe what you want your West Highland
Terrier puppy to be by way of temperament. A good breeder would have studied the
temperament of the parents and the puppies and be able to choose the right match
for you. West
Highland Terrier puppy care is not much, compared to the joy you will get
from this spirited little powder puff.
